Saw this the other day.  I disagree from what I've seen but Bill James is a stat guy.  Jeter's not what he once was, but sabermetrics is not based on smart play but quantitative analysis.

rollins is number 1.   he's probably in the top 3 in all of baseball.   jeter has been overrated for the last several years.

Anyone who watches him play knows that's completely ridiculous.

Uh....the guy who plays 2B next to him is a far worse fielder because he's incredibly lazy. So was Alfonso Soriano.

Correct on both counts.  Not to mention Giambi at first, Damon when they still let him play center, Abreau in right...

Jeter is, career wise, a poor fielder. He is tremendously overrated, especially by the New York media. Statistically, has rarely been above average, especially in the more accurate fielding measures, such as zone rating.

"They watched film of every major league game, and had recorded every ball off the bat by the direction in which it was hit(the vector), the type of hit(ground ball, fly ball, line drive, popup, etc) and by how hard the ball was hit(softly hit, medium hit, hard hit)," according to James.

Every defensive player in baseball, was observed on every defensive play and compared using a set criteria. It's doubtful that few, if any, have observed, more plays than they did. Based on objective measures, Jeter was found to be severely deficient defensively.

It's completely ridiculous that a large number of people, beyond Yankee fans and the New York media, think the fact the Jeter is a poor fielder is subject to dispute.

The Yankees as a team are not good fielders. It's a huge departure from their title teams, which had O'Neill and Williams in the OF, Brosius, Tino and Jeter in the IF, and the only real weak link was Knoblauch at 2B.
Jeter has lost some range.  If James used statistics, I am not going to argue.  James has a lot of merit to his point. I am a Yankee fan, and I don't believe Jeter hurts us with his glove.  The others that LAF mentioned, I do.  Jeter makes up for lost range by nailing an advancing baserunner or doing something that another guy wouldn't think to do.
That is where the purely quantitative analysis falls short.

Exactly right. The best fielding shortstop on the Yanks plays 3rd base.

You mean the guy that can't catch a pop up?

I'll take A Rod any day of the week at short over Jeter. It's amazing how overrated Jeter is by Yankee fans. Notice the only ones defending Jeter on this thread are Yankee fans. Let's see a Non Yankee fan defend Jeter.

jeter has had a knack at making the big play at the right time.   alot of players have done that over the years.  it still doesn't make him a great fielding shortstop.

It's one thing to say he's overrated. Okay. But, saying he's the worst fielder in all of MLB? Come on. There's guys on his own team that are way worse. Rossi named them. Giambi cannot even move at 1B. Cano lives in his own world. Bobby Abreu won't go anywhere near the wall. How are any of these guys better than Jeter in the field?
