Tony Dungy has decided to quit as coach of the Indianapolis Colts, according to several reports.

The Indianapolis Star reported that Dungy informed Colts owner Jim Irsay of his decision to retire from coaching over the weekend after discussing the issue with his wife, Lauren, and other family members.

According to a report by Fox, Dungy is telling people at the Colts' training complex that the time is right for him to step down and turn things over to his designated successor, Jim Caldwell.

The Colts have scheduled a news conference for 5 p.m.

Dungy had been contemplating his coaching future since the Colts' season ended in a first-round playoff loss at San Diego.

Last offseason, the Colts named Caldwell, their quarterbacks coach who also has the title of associate head coach, to succeed Dungy whenever he retired.

Dungy indicated after the game in San Diego that he'd take a week to make his decision. He followed a similar process in each of the previous few offseasons, having made it clear long ago that he doesn't consider himself a lifer in the coaching business and he wants to do other things related to his deep religious convictions.

The Colts went 12-4 this season, winning their final nine regular season games, and quarterback Peyton Manning won his third NFL most valuable player award. But they were upset by the Chargers in overtime in their playoff opener. Dungy, 53, has won a Super Bowl with the Colts and has a regular season record of 85-27 in seven seasons as the team's coach.

He served as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before that and has an overall regular season record of 139-69. He has reached the playoffs 11 times in 13 seasons as an NFL head coach.

The guy is nothing less than a class act.

I think the Colts will hire their one assistant under Dungy.  I would not be surprised if this was requested by Dungy.  I think it is the guy who filled in for him when he took time off before with the death of his son.

He didn't have anything left to prove, so if his heart's not in it, there's no reason to continue.

I think he will take a year or two off. He needs it. I was surprised he didn't do this after his son passed.

Dungy's pretty much the nicest guy ever involved in pro sports. Us Steeler fans remember him as a player and an assistant, and you could tell back then the guy was going to be something special.

Even when the NFL hype machine would push Peyton and the Colts down everyone's throat, it was knowing that it would give Dungy his due that made it easier to take.

Yep the word Class sums Dungy up. He proved sometimes nice guys do finish first.
