Remember them all.

How about

Salvador Sanchez-greatest Featherweight of his era, killed at 23 in a car crash, destroyed Wilfredo Gomez and Danny Lopez.

Wilfredo Benitez-one of my favorite fighters of all time.

Matthew Saad Muhammad-a real life Rocky if ever there was one.  Just an exciting fighter.

Lopez was a great featherweight and Snipes can at least say he fought Larry Holmes and still has his vision.

He knocked Holmes down, also.

I remember James "Quick" Tillis being the first guy to actually present some kind of challenge to Tyson, correct?  His manager kept saying in a southern drawl, "Come on, cowboy.  Go after him, cowboy.  I just looked he was from Oklahoma, so that makes sense.

Salvador Sanchez won the title from Danny "Little Red" Lopez.  I did not know that. His big matches came against Wilfredo Gomez, Juan LaPorte and Azumah Nelson.  Died in a car crash in 1982 at the age of 23.

Aaron "The Hawk" Pryor

Former Jr. Welterweight Champ

This guy was supposed to be the next great thing. Silver medal at the Pan-Am games and was an alternate on the '76 Olympic team.  Beat "Hitman" Hearns for the Golden Gloves in '76.

He went on to fight Alexis Arguello which was known as the Fight of the Year and later the Fight of the Decade.  I think it took place in 1982.  Pryor won with a TKO over Aguello.  This brought the "black bottle" controvrsy.  Pryor was given a mysterious black bottle before Round 13.  Runotrs swirled as to what was in the bottle.  One alleged source said it was a mixture of orange juice, honey and cocaine.

Pryor went on to retire a few times.  He battled drug problems throughout his career.  In alot of his big fights, he hit the canvas early in the match only to rebound and come back and win.  He was a heavy hitter.

He was a motyivational speaker for the 2006 NY Jets.  Mangini is a huge Pryor fan.

Alexis Arguello

I just remember the media and analysts being absolutely in love with this guy.

A few other names:

Dwight Braxton - later changed to something like Dwight Quawi.

Aaron Pryor - Beat Alexis Arguello at a time Arguello was being called the best in the world pound for pound.

Mike Rossman - could beat everybody except Victor Galindo.

"Jumbo" Floyd Cummings -  bit Renaldo Snipes years before Mike Tyson made it popular.

Kenny Buchanon -  Roberto Duran almost killed him on Wide World of Sports.

James Scott - became a ranked LHW contender while incarcerated in Rahway
Penitentiary. Made for bizarre tv broadcasts.

Bobby "Boogaloo" Watts - Pretty sure he is the answer to the question "Who was the last guy to beat Marvin Hagler before Ray Leonard?"

Bob Foster - LHW champion who only lost when he tried to fight heavyweights as I recall.

Where's James "Bonecrusher" Smith.  Another could have been fighter with the best nickname ever.

Anything on:

Alfredo Escalera- I recall some incident where he brought a snake into the ring late 1970s.

Marvin Johnson

Gerry Coetzee

Wilfredo Benitez (EDIT)  Oops- didn't see him mentioned before

I barely remember much about boxers but these names popped into mind when I saw the thread.

Marvin Johnson-didn't he lose to both Matthew Saad Muhammad and Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, when each had their American names?:)

Gerry Coetzee-had the dignity of getting whipped by John Tate as the next white hope and then getting his ass handed to him by Mike Weaver.

Wilfredo Benitez (EDIT)  Oops- didn't see him mentioned before

I loved Frank The Animal fletcher.  He was a bad man.

Iran "The Blade" Barkley was bad ass.  I remember how shocked I was when he beat Tommy Hearns.

Lyle vs. Foreman might be my all-time favorite fight.

Mine too...and you'll never see anything like it again. Now any more than 4 or 5 unanswered shots will get a stoppage, never mind 30.

I remember all of the fighters mentioned here. Great memories from a time when I was really into boxing. Lots of compelling personalities.
