What was it?

Sean Taylor being murdered

Colts winning Super Bowl in 2006/2007 season

Pats undefeated

Tim Donaghy NBA ref scandal

The Mitchell Report naming Roger Clemens

Barry Bonds being indicted

Bonds breaking Aaron's record

Spygate

Or something else I didn't think of?

If you're including Sean Taylor, then you have to include Benoit.
Even the main stream media covered the story, when usually,
wrestling doesn't get a mention at all.
The Pats haven't  gone undefeated for 2007 since there's one game left
on the schedule. So, I'll pick Bonds breaking Aaron's record.

The ref scandal was the biggest to me. Confirmed corruption of an official is the sort of thing that makes you have to stop and reconsider everything they were involved in and how they may have affected the outcome.

I'm not a big basketball fan, either.

I don't consider Benoit and the Taylor thing sports stories per say because what happened with them happened outside of the playing field. That's just me.

Biggest story if for no other reason than all the dialogue and debate it started.

I've read a few of these types of articles this week and Benoit has made a few top 10 lists.  It really was one of the biggest stories of the year and if someone is open to considering it a pseudo-sports story it gets included.

If you consider pro wres a sport, the Benoit murders.
Otherwise, the Mitchell Report.

It's happening now.  Phil Taylor knocked out of the PDC Championship in the quarter-finals, Ray van Barneveld knocked out in the 3rd round.  16 world titles between them and neither in the last 4.  Qualifier Kirk Shepherd, ranked 142 in the world before the tournament started, has made the final.
