There have been some good ones over here.  Grange Hill, a children's drama/soap that ran for 30 years, reached its peak in 1985 when fifth-former Zammo (I think that's 10th grade) got addicted to heroin and he twatted his girlfriend Jackie when she found it and poured it away.  Just as the police came to arrest him.  An episode written by Anthony Minghella on his way to Hollywood.

But the most poignant ever is the final episode of historical sitcom Blackadder Goes Forth.  The greatest - and I use that word advisedly - 30 minutes of comedy ever.

Given that it's Remembrance Sunday it's perhaps fitting you take a look at the last third here...

That Different Strokes episode where Big Guy Carlson form WKRP touched Dudley freaked me out as a kid!

I thought they'd have the Good Times Episode where JJ found out one of his girlfriends had a VD. That one sticks in my brain because I had no idea what "VD" was until the Evans family taught me.  I remember JJ looking it up in a dictionary or Encyclopedia.

Also, there was one on the facts of life that I'm thinking of, but the details are hazy. Seems like someone was raped or pressured into sex.

EDIT:  Maybe the Facts of Life one was about one of the girls getting pregnant?  Does anyone remember it?

Natalie was attacked and almost raped.

(Natalie, fer chrissakes...)

There are lots that people will remember that aren't on that list, I would imagine.

WKRP did one following the tragic Who concert in Cincinnati.

I thought it was Natalie. That's what I was seeing in my mind, but I didn't put it because I thought "why would they be raping Natalie?" LOL

Do "Lisa's Substitute" or "Mother Simpson" count as VSEs?  If so, one of the two probably should be up there--I prefer the latter myself.

Also, the Fresh Prince episode where Ben Vereen as Will's deadbeat father returns and then promptly abandons him again.

Two Only Fools & Horses episodes (arguably three) - Son of Del and Time On Our Hands, possibly Rodney's Wedding as well.

And to stretch a point...the Fast Show had occasional moments of poignancy, like Rowley Birkin's lost love, and Ralph's tenderness towards Ted...

The Diff'rent Strokes episode where Mr. Carlson tries to diddle Dudley and Arnold was okay, but to me the definitive VSE of Diff'rent Strokes is the one where Arnold calls up his pal First Lady Nancy Reagan to tell the kids in his classroom to Just Say No.  Nothing tops the sheer absurd implausibility or captures the zeitgeist as much as that episode.

Didn't they even have "YOU?!  Really?!" joke by Blair in that one, too?

Why no mention of "Blossom". That show supposedly had the 'Very Special Episode" moniker on every single show.:D

I always felt this was the best one since it dealt with a real event rather than taking the characters from a lighthearted show and putting them in uncharacteristically dangerous circumstances just to have a "The More You Know" style ending.

First thing I thought of. That whole series was a bunch of very special episodes mixed with Joey Lawrence yelling "whoa" a bunch.

What about the Happy Days episode where Chuck molests Joanie, and Fonzie "makes him disappear."  I loved the way Marion told Joanie Chuck was working on a dairy farm in Fon du Lac, and wouldn't be around anymore.
