This is pretty cool for a boatnerd like myself who grew up on the Great Lakes watching the lakers just like this one coming and going.

The ship is called the Canadian Miner,she is your typical "laker" of the timeframe,built in the mid 60's,the boat is 730' x 75', (same size as the more famous Edmund Fitzgerald) which was the largest they could be made at the time due to limitations of lock sizes on the Upper Lakes.

The old girl had served out as much time as a ship of that era could do on the Lakes and was being towed overseas to the scrappers torch in Turkey this September when the towline parted and she ran aground off of Scatarie Island in Canada,where after several attempts to move her failed,she had all of her fluids pumped out,the doors welded shut,and has been left to the elements.

The ship now sits awaiting the inevitable destruction by wind and waves and winter storms,here's just a few pics showing how massive this things is,and how quickly the elements can do in a ship when it gets grounded.

Kind of nice that the owners can simply abandon her without remorse...or government fines.

Don't know either way if they were fined, but you're right in that there should be some sort of penalty.

I'd love to be a kid again and living near this sight. If I could find a way on board that would be an awesome place to play.
Actually imagine playing paintball on an abandoned ship that size? That would be freaking awesome, kid or not.

The abadnoned Shipwreck act covers what to do with ships left where there is American jurisdiction,but in this case the owner is the salvage company who was charged with towing the ship to Turkey,and because of Canadian laws combined with the fact that all harmful fluids have been pumped from the ship and all windows and doors have been welded shut,combined with the idea that the ship is grounded and cannot be refloated means that they can in fact abandon the vessel to the elements.

Me,I'm with Carpetbegger,getting onboard would be pretty darn awesome,it's hard to put into words how damn big those lakers are unless you have seen them up close or been onboard one of them,and the Miner comes from the "glory days" of shipping on the lakes with the classic fore and aft construction and the 730' length,which was the maximum that would fit into the locks until the 80's,when 1000' boats,or "footers" were introduced to the lakes,and thise things are truly monstrous.

Unfortunately,it appears that the Miner will end up like the Brown when all is said and done,but that's better than going under the torch in Turkey,the old girl didn't give up the ghost so easily.........
