I have not watched any premium channel (HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, etc.) series such as "The Wire", "Oz", "True Blood" etc.
Does anybody recommend any of these?  I am not into comedies.  I got some free time before summer, so I was going to start one of these.

The Sopranos is essential viewing. If you have time to watch more than the 80+ hours that will take, watch The Wire. Everything else is second best after that.

I've heard good things about True Detective but haven't watched it yet.

Dexter would be good if you've not watched it.

1. The Sopranos
2. Mad Men
3. Six Feet Under
4. The Wire
5. Boardwalk Empire (first 3 seasons, I heard the last one sucks)
The Americans on FX rivals any of those. Great show.

It's fucking awesome and I recommend it 1000 percent. Shame the season finale is on Sunday (and then they start a new series with new characters next season). Each season is it's own 8-episode story.

dexter (never seen it, people love it)

non premium cable shows-

breaking bad
mad men

I'd add Curb Your Enthusiasm if you like absurd Seinfeld humor.

Ditto - The Shield is probably my all-time favorite program. I keep hoping FX will bring it back

Watching it from scratch on Netflix.  About halfway through Season 2 and it's pretty awesome.
