Well love makes us do some things we are not so proud of sometimes. My long suffering girlfriend is from deep in the heart of Texas. She grew up on C & W music. That's ok, we all have our quirks. I like Brazilian tranny porn for example. So she loves this duo imaginatively called Florida Georgia Line. I see they were coming to a MSG so I figure let me make my honey happy here. I make some calls and score some decent seats right next to the stage. [size=
]The big night comes and we take the mighty Long Island Railroad into the city. The first big difference I noticed from the past few Garden shows I've attended was this crowd was freaking young. Virtually all mid 20's. When I saw Fleetwood Mac there in 2013 there were literally oxygen tanks about. So now not only are all these kids in their 20's, but I would say it was a good 65% girls, and they were all exceedingly clean cut. I hate what NYC concerts have become. I think the Garden sold around 10 beers last night of which I had 8.
So now it's showtime. Starts right on time at 7:30 with this cat Frankie Ballard. Ballard is no upstart as he had played with Seger ' s Silver Bullet Band for years. Workman like performance.  He did a forgettable 25 minute set. His band was killer and they were glad to be there. The songs were useless though.
Fifteen minute intermission and this guy named Thomas Rhett comes out. He says he has the number one hit in the country right now but he didn't look like Beyonce to me. Slightly better than the opener until the last song. He does some type of "funk" song which sounded like a 5th rate Bootsy Collins.
Finally it was time for our heroes. I'm certainly no expert on country music but this sir, was not country music. George Jones would have stabbed them in the face with a soldering iron. Mother Maybelle Carter would have violated their asses with a 12 inch black dildo in front of 18,000 people at MSG. Bland, generic, paint by numbers cacophony. The kids ate this shit up. They knew every word to every song. They loved this shit. I didn't.  The terrorists have won and I weep for the future generations.

Before your post I was convinced that Florida Georgia Line was just WWE's house band and consisted of Hillbilly Jim, Bill Irwin, and The Godwinns in makeup.  I'm shocked that they actually do real shows in front of paying customers.  I'm not even being sarcastic, I've literally never heard of these guys outside of WWE.  Admitting to watching tranny porn is one thing, but I'm not sure if I can vote for you in next year's POTY tournament after this.

I hate new country my wife drags me to that shit. It has about as much to do with country music as Carrot Top does to comedy. I saw Frannkie Ballard open for Segar he would have been the highlight and he sucks.

It's the music edition of globalisation.

Growing up I was severely limited as our music stations have always been generic crap like modern stations everywhere. I'm not to sure how it was in the UK but here it basically in order not to be shit it had to be pirate radio or Radio Luxemburg or maybe Armed Forces stuff (some timeslots were good, some not). Too bad that you only got one of these options normally... if at all.

Anyways, so someday I hear about Napster but I don't have a decent internet connection but then I have a decent internet connection and Audiogalaxy was the best thing of all time that doesn't involve the penetration of orifices.

So at some point, because of mp3s and Youtube, I come across 70s Soul Train and I am mesmerized. Then I see what kind of shit Cornelius had to deal with when the 80s hit.
In similar fashion I was amazed to listen to stuff from Jamaica from Trojan Records, only to be baffled what kind of shit has come from there in the last 30 years. It's not that I completely hate dub, but come on.

Anyways...
Everybody has the same influences nowadays, everybody has to adhere to the same focus groups. Shit has been streamlined. "Country" like that is just a gimmick or an expression of mental retardation as what they think is country is not country at all. Piss on the grave of the guy who got rid of the fiddles in Nashville. Shit on it. And get an appreciation for the Muppet Show as they didn't shit all over country. Seriously. Rewatching that stuff made me remember that it's not supposed to be bland shit. Not always at least.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that Garth Brooks was the biggest thing since Michael Jackson, and everyone is trying to copy his style of pop rock country in the hopes of making it as big.

Living in GA, the country scene is vibrant, yet I am with Wong.  I have never enjoyed it whatsoever. I'd take the blues, jazz and classical over it any day. Maybe it's the 3rd-grade level musicianship.

Florida Georgia Line are not bad. They actually do have some decent songs. Thomas Rhett is okay. My Wife loves Country so I have had to learn to tolerate a good bit of dreck, but these guys are okay.

Think it is more the likes of Tim McGraw, Shania Twain, and Faith Hill that really started the cross over trend more than Garth.  Then it was ramped up by the likes of Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift. The simple fact is you can not fault these guys for making catchy music that actually sells.  Just remember Vernon Dalhart, John Carson, and Uncle Dave Macon would be bitching about George Jones, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson for watering down and bastardizing country music too.

They're kind of a redneck Nickelback.

I always wondered how Nickelback became the Kleenex of bad music.  I mean their lyrics are cringe-worthy of course, but lots of bands' lyrics are ridiculous and some bands are even worse.  But people really hate Nickelback with a passion.  I guess it's because they sold more albums than almost any rock act in the 2000s and people feel like they don't deserve it.

Out of curiosity I checked out the setlist for this MSG show.  Of course I don't know any of their songs, but they did 21 and 6 of them were covers including almost their entire encore.  And they tried to be cute by covering artists like Dr. Dre, Wiz Khalifa, and Bruno Mars as well as country like Garth Brooks and Meghan Trainor.  Also did a Black Stone Cherry cover, which is weird because I didn't think they were big enough for anyone to cover, much less a country act.  So anyway, it doesn't seem like they have that much original material and rely on a lot of gimmicky shit in concert.  I can't imagine how bad those covers must've been.

rossi pointed out the cringe-worthy lyrics, and I think that's a big one. Also Chad Kroger's voice never sounds any different from song to song, and I know that can be said about many, many other singers, but he never seems to change pitch, hit a high note, or anything. Most other singers like that can vary things even a little bit from time to time. That doesn't help them either.

I'm not a fan at all, and honestly they are so hated by everyone I talk to that I wonder how they did hit it big sometimes. I think a lot of folks liked them at the start and then the switch got flipped quickly when they were everywhere all the time on the music scene.

"Animals" is my one guilty pleasure Nickelback song, because Chad stepped it up a bit on the ridiculous porno writing, mixing sex and fast cars.  Some of the rhymes are downright inspired on that one.

You're beside me on the seat
Got your hand between my knees
And you control how fast we go by just how hard you wanna squeeze
It's hard to steer when you're breathing in my ear
But I got both hands on the wheel while you got both hands on my gears
By now, no doubt that we were heading south
I guess nobody ever taught her not to speak with a full mouth
'Cause this was it, like flicking on a switch
It felt so good I almost drove into the ditch
I'm screamin'

We were parked out by the tracks
We're sitting in the back
And we just started getting busy
When she whispered "what was that?"
The wind, I think 'cause no one else knows where we are
And that was when she started screamin'
"That's my dad outside the car!"
Oh please, the keys, they're not in the ignition
Must have wound up on the floor while
we were switching our positions
I guess they knew that she was missing
As I tried to tell her dad it was her mouth that I was kissing
Screamin'

That's fucking poetry there, people.
