So I finally finished watching all five seasons of the Wire. I thought it was good, and had no problem watching each season, but it was very slow.

For years, I have heard and read on the 'net that this is the greatest drama in television history. Maybe because it portrayed real life, better than any other drama? Not sure.

I think it was good, but not great. Maybe its just me.
For me, Sopranos is vastly superior, and Breaking Bad as well.

Curious to hear others opinions on the show.

*Seven year old spoiler*
After all that, THAT's how Omar is killed??? STUPID.

Some aspect of Breaking Bad might have surpassed it at points, particularly the brilliant dialogue when Walter White is being manipulative with his family, but for my money The Wire is still the best TV show of all-time and Season 3 is the best season of any TV show of all-time.  Breaking Bad is the only show that can even be mentioned in the same breath.  It even laps The Sopranos, which I loved, but The Wire is in a different class than almost anything I've ever seen.  The Wire's worst season, Season 2, is better than 95% of shows I've ever seen.

I only watched Season 2.  It was a good show, but not anywhere as good as The Sopranos, The Americans, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, etc....IMO.

Season 2, although while it was a good season, it was the weakest season of the run. You can tell by Season 5 they were trying to figure out how to wrap up everyone's story line (hence Omar going out as weak as he did). Living in the DMV, I saw a lot of this play out on the news and this was one of the shows were they really got it right when comparing it to real life. That's why it's a top 5 show of all time for me.

It was pretty slow because it was the most realistic show on TV. The Sheild was fast paced, but not very realistic. The Wire was also great because every season was much different than the others. i liked the second season. It gave a great insight on how drugs are imported and then hit the streets.

I also think it's the best TV show ever. I think it was because of the complex layering of multiple storylines, characters and themes.

I also liked Homicide A LOT. Sopranos are a clear 2nd. Nothing else comes close imo.

I would take The Wire over Breaking Bad.

The Wire was a good show.

Breaking Bad generated no appeal or interest for me. Attempted to watch it a few times.

They almost lost me after the first 2 or 3 episodes because they were so slow and dry.

Glad I stuck with it, easily one of my top 5 favorite shows. I'd put Sopranos ahead of it and would really have to think to come up with anything else I like better than the Wire.

Wife and I have finally started on this show. We're halfway through season 2 and it's a GREAT show, but it's nowhere NEAR as great IMO as The Sopranos, Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones. I put it in my tier 2 of great shows, more of the "A-" list with Mad Men.

It's damned great and realistic as hell though, I get why people fawn all over it, I just don't get the "Greatest show of all time' love it gets, it's honestly not even close to Breaking Bad IMO..

GoT is as overrated as it gets. I enjoy the show, but you can't compare it to The Wire or Breaking Bad. The dialogue isn't that well-written and the last 2 seasons in particular have all sorts of plot holes. It's basically comparing a comic book to Shakespeare.  You can't take a show about tits and dragons that seriously.

I put game of thrones up there because it's fucking epic. Dialogue isn't as good yes, but it's a damned EPIC, hell, a MOVIE every week 7-10 episodes a season..it's such a grand scale of a show it's deserving of it's spot at the top..

Hell, the CGI on that show is better than almost ever ymovie done, shit, hell, watching this season it hit me it's better than the shit Lucas' crew is doing on the last few Star Wars movie and they basically STARTED this shit..

Epic in terms of production sure. But look at the last season. Did ANY of those episodes need to be aired other than the final one?  Tons of filler and then one killer show. Everything in The Wire and Breaking Bad is important and is something you need to remember 5 episodes later. GoT is a bunch of nonsense to fill the time before the one or two really great episodes a season. It loses major points from me for that.

I've read the books so yeah, that all needed to be aired..even though most of this last season wasn't in the books, it needed to be aired..

Yeah I'm confused. They've gotten ahead of the books (and the show has suffered since that happened) so I don't know what the books have to do with it. I was bored to tears for most of the season and felt like they could've just done a 2 hour movie and accomplished the same much more succinctly and it would've been awesome.

I liked The Wire. As a rule I really don't like cop shows (yeah I know I know), but this one wasn't half bad because the emphasis I felt was more on the dealers than the cops.

To me, my two ATF's are the Sopranos and Oz followed closely by Six Feet Under.

My biggest problem with all these shows is that they all seem to be hell bent on killing off major characters mostly for shock value. The Sopranos had no one left standing except Paulie. Oz cut the states prison population by 85%. It got to the point of being ridiculous.

My wife and I had not owned a TV for the past eight years by choice. Yeah, we're "those people". She had a moment last week and plunked down $299 on a 50" Westinghouse Smart TV. The picture is godlike. Amazing clarity for a cheap set which I'm sure does not have all the latest toys. Maybe I'll catch up on some shows.
