A Georgia police lieutenant recorded on video saying "we only kill black people" during a traffic stop is being allowed to retire.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Cobb County Public Safety Director Sam Heaton confirmed Friday that Lt. Greg Abbott "did request an immediate retirement and we have approved his request."
The announcement came a day after police Chief Mike Register told reporters he intended to fire Abbott. Heaton told the newspaper the officer would have been entitled to full retirement benefits even if he was terminated.
Abbott was recorded on dashcam video from a July 2016 traffic stop. A woman can be heard saying she's scared to move her hands. Abbott, who is white, interrupts her and says, "But you're not black. Remember, we only kill black people."

"Once he retires, he is no longer employed, so no disciplinary action can take place," Heaton told CNN. "He is entitled to his retirement, which he would've received even if he was fired."
Speaking at a news conference, Register said, "I feel that no matter what context you try to take those comments in, the statements were inexcusable and inappropriate. They're not indicative of the values that I'm trying to instill within the Cobb County police department and that I believe the county holds."

Register said he learned of the comments after television station WSB-TV obtained the video and made the department aware of it. Abbott, who had been an officer for 28 years, was placed on administrative duties while the department investigated the video.
Abbott's attorney, Lance LoRusso, did not immediately respond to an email Thursday seeking comment on the firing. He had earlier said in a statement that Abbott was co-operating with the investigation, and his comments were meant to "de-escalate a situation involving an unco-operative passenger."

Register said he's worked hard since becoming chief in June to strengthen the relationship between the department and the community.

"It's sad to think that several seconds of video has the potential of tearing that apart, and I hope that is not the case," he said, later adding, "This badge and this uniform should mean that there's justice and fairness for all."
The department plans to rework its policies for reviewing videos to better catch problems, Register said.
Register said he's known Abbott for many years and has known him to be an honorable man. The report from the internal review indicates that Abbott was trying to be sarcastic and to address the situation as he perceived it, Register said.
"He made a mistake," Register said. "I don't know what's in his heart but I certainly know what came out of his mouth. It's inexcusable."

Black community leaders had earlier applauded Register's commitment.
"Although we applaud them for their transparency in this regard, the officer's interjection of race into the stop was particularly troubling and may be systematic, a deeper issue in the department," said Deane Bonner of the Cobb County chapter of the NAACP.
"Police misconduct is not news," said Ben Williams, chairman of the Cobb County chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. "The real story here, in my opinion, is the behavior of this police chief in Cobb County, Georgia."
"To be here today and to stand with Chief Register as he pulls the shades up and exposes the sunrise here in Cobb County as that pertains to the conduct of the Cobb County Police Department, that's the news," he added.

Nah, saw this in Facebook 2-3 days ago. If I posted every bad cop story here, I wouldn't have time to sleep.

Why does America have such a fetish for people in uniform? Each and every one of them is a civil servant. You get the job by taking a civil service test which can easily be passed with a high school diploma. Why are these people lionized? Where I grew up it was unheard of to call the cops. You had a problem you and your family took care of it. Cops are trained to escalate even the simplest situations. Here on Long Island the cop worship is especially bad. I find that people who were born and raised on the Island are usually virulent racists. Perhaps they think the pigs will "protect" them from all those nasty colored. I taught my children to never, under any circumstance, trust a pig. Whatever happens, we will take care of it as a family. No, that's not internet tough guy talk. I have many friends who think exactly the same way.

My wife was born in Northport. Some of her brothers and sisters are so bigoted and racist that I cannot stand ro be around them but for so long before I have to walk away.  I grew up in Eastern NC and we have nothing on these assholes.

It was a stupid thing to say, but it was a joke. He wasn't being serious.

True, Blue, very true.

But with the political climate being what it is today all anybody has to do is claim to be offended to get someone fired from their job.

Cops have even fewer rights than citizens.

You could take the above quote, apply it to the military, make a few tweaks, and have it lose nothing in the point it makes. I've always found the blind worship of the military in an Imperialist society more than a bit concerning.

This.  I'll tell one of my 2 first-hand cop stories as fortunately I've had very little interaction with any.

The last big fight I had with my wife was when she called 911 over a disturbance that we heard in the house next door.  There was loud arguing, a couple of crashes, and then a noise that could've been someone falling down stairs (but who knows what it really was).  I've told my wife a million times to NEVER bring cops into our area.  It's bad enough when they're around without us drawing them in.  I'll handle the situation and if I can't, the cops aren't going to get there in time or do anything of value anyway.

But this time she's on the phone to 911 within seconds, before I even got into the room to see what the fuck was going on.  She's reporting a possible domestic violence situation and says someone could be seriously hurt already.  I took our dog and left.  I will not be present when cops show up and will not have our dog around them.  She's a big goofy lab mix that we got from the pound and might have a little pit in her, and I've been told she looks intimidating even though she's not.  I like that because she would probably scare away an intruder, but poodles and lollipops terrify pussy cops so she'd be shot on sight by them.  So I took her on a long one hour walk to cool off and get her away.

I come back to my block, no flashing lights, no smell of bacon.  I go back home and find out the cops never showed up.  5 minutes later, 911 calls my wife back.  This is a 100% true story and I don't give a shit if bootlickers believe it.  I thought cops automatically showed up when you call 911 about something like this.  They do not.  65 minutes later they asked my wife if she still heard a disturbance next door.  My wife was like, "Uh, no, it's been an hour.  It's quiet now."  The 911 operator says, "Well the situation might have been resolved.  There's probably no need to send the cops now but call back if you hear anything else."  Honest to God.  65 minutes, no response to a situation that my wife made sound super serious, and they just shrugged their shoulders and never sent help, assuming that "quiet now" meant everyone kissed and made up and that the husband hadn't murdered his wife and was trying to figure up how to clean up the scene.

911 is a joke.  Never call it.  But at least I got the dog some exercise.

Other than the last sentence, which is comical, I actually agree with this.  In our PC environment, cops do routinely get more seriously punished for making bad jokes than they do for actually killing people.  It's a bizarre world we live in where words are always vilified more than actions, especially by liberals.
