I guess it’s semantics at this point, but Petty was taken off of life support (as TMZ correctly reported) which doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s dead yet. CBS used that information from the same source to spruce up their headline and say he was dead, causing just about every other news and entertainment source to reporting his death. Obviously they need to be more careful in their wording if they expect to be taken seriously. They’re fucking CBS, they should know better. But there is no scenario in which Petty starts functioning on his own again. They’re waiting for him to die.

My band used to do "Last Dance with Mary Jane" and we've been doing his other band, "Mudhoney"'s cover of the Byrds "Lover of the Bayou" lately at our gigs. We have a gig Saturday, our co-lead player who sort of leads the band is gone to the beach and we're playing as a 4 piece, the guy that plays lead is a bad mofo on guitar and he's already text'd me and told me to learn the bass parts to "Won't Back Down", "Breakdown" and "Free Fallin" because we're going to all of them at Saturday's gig...I'm pretty stoked because I've been wanting to do more Tom Petty, we only do about 5 covers out of the 25-30 songs we play at gigs but if it were up to me from the start 3-4 of those covers would be Tom Petty songs. When I was a kid as I may have said before here my mom broke me in listening to all her Elvis records but for my 5th birthday mom and dad got me this portable Sony radio. I had a playhouse dad built me and my brother out back of the house and from 5 years on I would take that radio out there and play it while we played. I'd say Tom Petty and Foreigner were the 2 bands/acts I remember the most just thinking even as a kid "Man, this is good stuff" Petty especially. If it were up to me I'd have turned our entire band into a Tom Petty cover band, Mike Campbell is one of my favorite guitar players and Tom's ability to craft a song that most of the times is 3 simple chords yet he does the song where it sounds so complex and full...

Sad sad day. My favorite ever and I was lucky enough to see him live a few times over the years. They just don’t make ‘em like this anymore.

I have no inside information of course, but when Guns N' Roses resume their tour next week (I'm going to 2 of the 3 shows at MSG), I'm willing to bet they play "Free Fallin'".  They've been doing "Black Hole Sun" so maybe this tribute replaces that one.

His wife and daughter put out a statement that an OD of fentanyl and oxy caused the heart attack.  Didn’t see that coming.

Apparently he had a really bad hip injury that he was performing through and earlier in the day it completely broke. His band thinks he OD’d because of the pain from that. He had way too many fentanyl patches on. I didn’t even know they made fentanyl patches. I feel like some doctor is going down for this.

Fentanyl is so lethal in the smallest amounts. I can't believe those patches were designed to be anything more than end of life pain meds for cancer patients.

So yeah a doctor is gonna get hung out to dry for that I would guess. Wow.

This is not part of the so called Opioid crisis. Petty had five different painkillers in his system. They certainly weren't all prescribed by the same guy. Probably most of them weren't prescribed at all. He shouldn't have been out on tour when in such poor health. He was no stranger to opioid narcotics as he admitted he was a heroin addict for most of the 90's. Now the cry will go up again to ban these evil painkillers. Never mind the millions of people who need this shit just to get out of bed everyday. The ones who take it responsibly. But lets make sure that Tom Petty and Prince didn't die in vain.

As usual, the rich and famous fuck up and then they crackdown on the poor schlubs who are dealing with chronic pain. The rich will still get what they need and the poor then have to turn to heroin. Forget about the fact that the overwhelming number of people prescribed even the strongest painkillers never OD on it.

But anyway, to your point, fentanyl is the drug of the hour, so those other painkillers will fly under the radar and the doctor(s) who prescribed those patches will be focused on.  It’s all about what a 70-year old Congressman in middle America has heard about on the local news recently. It’s not like there’s real thought that goes into these reactionary witchhunts.

Why was Tom Petty touring with a fully broken hip instead of being at home recovering? Was it his own money he was worried about, or perhaps the Heartbreakers? Apart from Mike Campbell, who has a lot of songwriting and production credits, the tours were how those guys made their dough. Even if that was the case, it makes little sense to put one's self through that.
