Here's a math puzzle on the net that has stumped many people.
The answer is NOT 13. The puzzle is as follows:

My theme this week seems to be Internet math problems. A couple of days ago I wrote about how many holes there are in a straw (spoiler alert: there's one hole). Then I saw this article about a second grade math problem that too many people online seemed unable to solve. The question: there are 49 dogs registered in a dog show. There are 36 more small dogs than large dogs. How many small dogs are signed up to compete?

Here is the answer , but try to solve the math problem before reading the solution.

Now, I'm not sure this is really a second grade math problem, since my immediate approach was to introduce variables and set up some equations. Let s be the number of small dogs and let l be the number of large dogs. Then s + l = 49 and s = l + 36. Putting this together yields 2l = 13, or l = 6.5 large dogs. That means there are s = 42.5 small dogs. Huh?
OK. Clearly the problem designer just made a mistake with 49. Any even number 36 or larger would have been fine to yield a whole number of large dogs. Unfortunately, this isn't what seemed to cause the controversy. Rather, comments sections were filled with all sorts of specious arguments with 13 large dogs somehow being a popular answer (I think since 49 - 36 = 13).

I think the problem is that people don’t read to comprehend anymore.

This is basic calculus. Probably more advanced than second grade, but everyone would have been taught this at school.

Have you ever been in a store grocery or otherwise and the registers  are down and the clerk some grade school dropout is trying to figure out your change and they get a focused look on their face like they just show t themselves trying to figure your change.
Then there is this common core math crap. People's noses are buried in their electronic devices they can barely speak never mind relatively simple math.

These people are the future.

You can't use maths to solve it, because it doesn't give a whole number answer.  Simultaneous equations; x+y=43, x-36=y.  x is 42.5, y is 6.5.
