I have no idea about any of this.   Who should or should not win an Oscar.

Are there any good movies out there to watch?

I saw “Get Out” and was not impressed.

The other half really liked the “Three Billboards..”   She thinks I would like it, because she thought it was a Fargo-like type of movie.

Any opinions?

I haven't seen any of the movies nominated. My wife saw Dunkirk and liked it.

I thought Get Out was great, but not Best Picture worthy. The only other one I saw was Dunkirk. It was just ok. Nothing special.

You did not think it was predictable?

I also cannot believe it (Get Out) was up for Best Picture.

3 billboards...everyone in movie was dispictable in the film. I would pick that to win but gotta feeling Shape of Water will win best picture. Frances McDormick wins best actress and Gary Oldham best. Never saw Get Out but thought it was a remake of Guess who coming to Dinner. I liked Dunkirk but thought it was over rated.

I’m assuming Black Panther will be up next year. The racism of the Oscars has gotten comical.

These are the only 2 I saw as well. I saw Dunkirk on a plane so obviously not the best conditions to watch it for the visual effects, but I thought it was pretty boring. Not even close to a top 100 war movie. And Get Out was a goofy little movie where you watch it and say “Well that was a little different and sorta interesting” but in no way is it in the stratisphere of Oscar contenders other than the fact that I guess Denzel didn’t make a movie this year.

I've seen most of them. 2017 was not a great year for movies. None of the nominations are bad movies, and I can't name any movie that has been unjustly left out, but I don't think any of this year's movies are future classics.

Get Out deserves it's place this year, and it's nothing to do with race. It's a very good movie in a genre that very rarely gets any Oscar nods.

Even Denzel Washington's nomination for a very average movie is probably more of a Denzel Washington thing than a black thing. He's going to become like Meryl Street and get nominated almost every year.

Me too. I LIKED it, it was a fun watch but it had a lot of flaws and was about 15 in too long, that first hour CREPT along and almost made me tap out of it..

Just got finished watching The Shape of Water and Three Billboards.

The Shape of Water was pretty much Beauty and the Beast and not very interesting with the obvious exception being Michael Shannon. This guy plays fucking creepy guy perfectly.

I thought Three Billboards was really good. Sam Rockwell knocked it out the park with his performance and I love Woody Harrelson in anything. Peter Dinklage also had some nice scenes including, "You know, I didn't have to come and hold your ladder."

I still have Darkest Hour on my media server that I need to watch, but Three Billboards is the winner so far.

This time of the year (Spring/Summer) is when all the big budget action hero movies come out- usually draw big at the box office, but for Oscar movies, they'll mostly be held back until after Thanksgiving. Oops, didn't see when this thread was started- my bad!

Get Out gets my vote for most overrated movie of all time. It was a decent movie, but nowhere near as good as what people are saying about it. I blind bought it on Blu-ray because at one point it was the #1 ranked horror movie OF ALL TIME. Better than The Shining? Better than Rosemary's Baby? Better than The Exorcist or The Omen? I had to see it....and I was disappointed. The wife was too.

I can only come to the conclusion that the movie is so highly rated because it's a movie about black people being terrorized by white people. For some reason, that seems to get a lot of people off these days.
