I knew it was bad but until a few days ago I thought they were just closing a ton of stores.  Now it turns out the whole company is going under.  Definitely a big piece of many people's childhoods.  Who could forget those commercials and the "I'm a Toys R Us kid" jingle?

I’ve taken my kids to toys r us more in the past 2 years than I went during my entire childhood.

Geoffrey, Gigi, and Baby Gee deserve a better fate. You'd think some big Ecommerce company would buy the name and do 100% online business.

Fuck. I've still got about $100 in gift cards. I need to run to the nearest outlet and blow them on something, anything.

This has been coming for a long time.  I remember last year when we were having our baby telling people to try to stay away from Babies R Us, especially for gift cards but even when it comes to us having to make returns, because we didn't know how much longer they'd be around, at least not locations near us.  Yeah, you better run.

I love going even by myself to Toys-R-Us as it gives me a good feeling inside. My son has only known Toys-R-Us as the only place to really get good toys and we take him as often as we can. Going to have to get him over there really soon.

You've just been added to a sex offender watchlist.

I'm 45 and I don't think I've ever stepped foot in a Toys R Us. We sure as hell didn't have any within driving distance of where I lived as a kid (and still do), except maybe one in Charlotte...

Eh, I still yearn for the days of Children’s Palace.

My toy store was always Play World on Steinway. It probably shut down when I was 13 or so. It was just as big as a Toys R Us, one of the last surviving major mom and pop operations.

We didn't have Toy R' Us around here until the 90's and I was in my 20's. Not surprising, but some of them took over the exact same space as the recently shut-down Children's Palace and Lionel PlayWorld stores. Toy R' Us was usually right next to a Best Buy, so I'd go in there, frequently, to look for SEGA video games. I also got into "comic book action figure" collecting in the mid-90's and they usually had the best selection.

Even up to about 10 years ago, I'd still drop in to look for a cheap PS2 game or some baseball card "rack packs".

They were doomed ever since Amazon got big. Shopping anywhere is a horrendous experience. I have bought everything I could online ever since that has been an option. Maybe the fact that I worked in retail for so long soured me to the general public, but I avoid them now wherever possible.

I think the one near us closed down. We used to go when my daughters were younger for Christmas gifts. My wife would drag me there. One year, after I was on the road all them ( I think in 05), she decided to punish me by giving me a list for Toys R US. I paid my office manager a $100 extra to go and buy the shit for me.

Still waiting for an announcement. They say it could happen today, and that they'll announce all stores will close by next week. I checked last night and I have $113 of gift cards. It's about a half hour to the nearest store for me. I was thinking I'd go there tonight but I'm waiting for the announcement first. I'm hoping they'll immediately put stuff on sale, even though that's often a bit of a scam. The JCPenney in my town closed last year and their "closeout" prices were generally just as much, if not more, than the normal prices. I did pick up some nice shelving for my garage, though...

Do not fuck around.  When a store closes down, in a lot of cases they stop accepting gift cards.  And it doesn’t matter if they get sued because the list of secured creditors will take every penny left.
