"Rosanne" had great ratings from the start, but the first season was a bit choppy. The show took flight creatively once Rosanne and Tom Arnold seized creative control. It's easy to rip on both of them, but they got the show and its characters. More importantly, and in a role for which he rarely received recognition, Tom Arnold protected the writers from the extremes of Rosanne's personality and behavior while also selling their ideas to her when there was a disagreement. That led to the show hitting its stride creatively and in the ratings for several years. When Tom and Rosanne split up, the writers lost their protector and many were gone and replaced by others that were more compliant with the star. The show started on a slow, but steady decline that culminated in the insane and nearly unwatchable final season that was a gigantic ego trip for Rosanne who by that time had no one remotely attempting to limit her.

My take is that she probably recognizes how awful and out control that last season was and that they'll probably wipe it from existence somehow. One interesting thing about her character being a Trump supporter now is that the character back then was played as someone you'd expect to be very much behind the liberal side of the Democratic party more and more as the show went on. It would be interesting to see if there is any addressing of that switch in ideology and, if so, how.

Not a bad show tonight. Several humorous spots. It has a All In The Family feel to it with Roseanne as Archie and Jackie as Meathead.

The 1st episode revolved almost entirely around politics and the jokes already were hopelessly dated - pussy hats and pantsuit jokes. I was embarrassed for them. And then everyone made up in 22 minutes. Just horrendous. At least no one can accuse them of liberal bias because they portrayed Aunt Jackie to be such a kook that it destroyed her character but certainly didn’t make liberals look good.

The 2nd episode was much better, but they’re trying way too hard with the tranny kid, the black kid, and all the other tropes.

At least they’re still the ugliest family on TV. That alone makes the show stand out after all these years because no on on TV looks like them. 2 fat old parents, Darlene looks like she has AIDS, Becky sounds like she smokes 10 packs a day, and D.J. grew up to be a weird-looking man-child.

Monster ratings for "Roseanne" as it drew 17.7 million for episode 1 and that actually increased to 18.2 million for episode 2.  It managed to get substantially better ratings than its final season in 1997, which of course was a completely different era when sitcoms drew much higher ratings in general.  In comparison, a decent showing for "The Big Bang Theory", by far the most popular sitcom today, also gets about 18 million.

It probably got a big audience in large part due to the curiosity factor and will fall off, but ought to get healthy ratings by current standards.

I will continue to watch until it gets repetitive or goes way over the top which could very likely occur.

So, you're saying the show is staying true to form. Might have to check it out. Thanks for the great review.

Maybe I saw a half a dozen of the episodes from the first go around so I am not the best source. It was OK. Kind of agree with Rossi that they are trying a bit hard on certain things. Clearly, they want to represent the entire political spectrum somehow. Gotta be honest - prefer the fat John Goodman. This version looks creepy to me.

I see this as a show that people will watch initially for the curiosity factor. The humor is pretty good for a network show but there are so many other options that are better than this. In today's world a show can survive even with a modest amount of viewers. This one probably will unless Roseanne does something to fuck it up.

Donald Trump’s shadow may have loomed large over the premier of ABC’s reboot ofRoseanne, but one of the show’s stars says the debate about presidential politics was a one-time event.
Sara Gilbert, who plays Darlene, said it was never the intention of the show to focus on politics—or to align itself with the president.
“The Conners aren’t Trump supporters. Roseanne’s character is a Trump supporter — she’s the only one — and we never say his name, actually, in the show,” she said during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live.
Roseanne Barr, like her character Roseanne, is an outspoken Trump supporter—and some parties believe it was that support that helped draw in viewers. The show pulled in an incredibly strong 21.9 million viewers last week, and Barr even received a congratulatory phone call from Trump.

The last couple of episodes have been much better. I think they’ve killed Jackie's character and made her a loon, but other than that the writing and acting have gotten better with each episode.
