'Code for no black people': New York bar's 'racist' dress code sparks online debate

Rochester, N.Y., resident Herbert Smith wasn’t aware of the controversy he was about to create when he was moved to post a photo of a local bar’s dress code to his Facebook page. But since he took to social media to share the long list of items that can’t be worn inside the Murphy’s Law Irish Pub in his neighborhood, some people are calling out the bar for enforcing a “racist” dress code.

While making plans with a friend to meet up at a nearby bar, Smith received a picture of the questionable dress code posted in the front window of Murphy’s Law. He tells Yahoo Lifestyle that “it immediately struck a chord.” Although he wasn’t entirely sure what to think about it, he decided to call attention to it.

“I post a lot of stuff on Facebook, so I thought a few of my friends would chime in,” he says. “But what happened next I was not expecting.”

Dress codes for bars and clubs isn't anything new. I remember a friend getting told at the door to a place probably 15 to 20 years ago that he couldn't get in wearing the baseball jersey he had on. I also remember hearing a radio ad for a club night somewhere a decade ago that vaguely said a dress code would be enforced and everyone should "dress to impress" without necessarily saying what that meant. Clearly this bar is trying to keep a certain class of customer out on weekend evenings and likely the bar itself or at least the ownership/management elsewhere had faced some trouble to go to this length. I'll be honest, the list of clothes is certainly favored in one way or another by black young adults but there are lots of white and other people who dress that way too. I see it mainly about keeping out younger men who will drink more and get into fights or other issues. It'll be interesting to see what the bar says in response, if anything.

Plenty of bars/clubs/lounges have dress codes. I don't think I've ever seen something this specific written out in detail tho. Especially not at an Irish pub of all places. It stands out as too weird. I don't really see anything 'racist' although specifically mentioning Timberland brand instead of just saying work boots in general can make it borderline. I would have dropped the Timberland part

If that's racist, it's more racist towards hillbilly white guys than anyone else. Welcome to the PC world.

Well it’s poorly written. Just say no baseball caps. First no ripped jeans then another line for no jeans period, which quite frankly would obliterate 99% of the demo for an Irish bar right there. No “white tees”?  I don’t know what that is unless they mean a wifebeater which is already covered by no sleeveless shirts. In fact the whole thing reads so awkward that I question if it’s real or a made-up sign designed for Internet outrage. But of course none of that changes the fact that plenty of white guys dress like that and plenty of black guys are capable of going out dressed very nicely every night.

So what if they said no Nike's of any kind?

The story with the "no white t-shirts" is this. I'm not sure if it is still the case or not, but a decade ago the corner drug dealer wore an oversized white t-shirt as something of a standard uniform. It's clear what the intent was there although you have to wonder, as was noted, what portion of their clientele was likely to dress like that anyway.

There's nothing racist about it. They just want their customers dressing more presentable on the weekends, when they are at their busiest and people tend to get crazier.

Really calling attention specifically to Timberland boots is the only thing that really sticks out to me. Plenty of other races wear ripped jeans, and the word 'baggy' is subjective at best.

Timberland stock made me a lot of money almost 20 years ago.  God bless that fashion craze in the minority community.
