Those were all No. 1 on the R & B charts, not the Billboard Hot 100.

In the late 1940s the R&B charts were called the Race Records charts.

What is the actual mechanism for getting into the HoF?  Is it strictly fan voting?  And when does a band or artist become eligible?
I'm just asking because I don't understand how Radiohead aren't (A) already inducted and/or (B) unanimous inductees this year.  The band are Pink Floyd/Zeppelin/Stones level in terms of output, sales, acclaim, etc.  If you visit the Best Ever Albums website, they occupy 4 of the top 18 spots.  They were also innovators outside the studio, the honor-system e-release of In Rainbows for example.  I understand if this person or that doesn't connect with them but in the overall picture their track record is unassailable.

The designation "No. 1 record" applies to the Billboard Hot 100, which has been the standard for decades. Being No. 1 on the R & B chart is like being No. 1 on the Easy Listening chart. It's competition limited to a particular genre of music.
Kind of like the difference between an "All-America" football player and a Small College All-America football player.

I dunno.

R & B acts in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame?

Isn't this how we ended up having a black 'Miss America' complete with a black girl winning the regular 'Miss America' also and  the blonde All-American girl with big cans crying in the background?

By the way if you let Joan Jett into the R & R Hall Of Fame, then you put Stevie Nicks in also

Erick Von Erich wrote: That Alice in Chains/Warrant story is interesting. When AiC first came out in late 1990 with the single "We Die Young", they were going for that hair band/pop metal vibe. I remember seeing it and thinking they were like a Lynch Mob, Babylon AD, Love/Hate or any other second/third level metal band.

Then, about 3-4 months later, they released "Man in the Box" as a single and they had changed quite a bit... even though it was the same album. So, uh, good marketing?

That summer (1991) they were the opener on the "Clash of the Titans" tour with Slayer and Anthrax. They were almost boo'ed off the stage when they played the Red Rocks (Denver) stop.

So I always thought the "grunge" thing was a little unfair, especially to AiC and Soundgarden. I feel that they were metal bands, first, and got lumped with grunge for marketing purposes.

Alice In Chains’ first album is one of my all-time favorites and I’ve always viewed it as metal. At the very least, it bridges the gap between the genres. They went grungier after that, but I like all their albums, even the new stuff post-Layne. AIC at Hammerstein Ballroom this year was my favorite concert of 2018. Cantrell still kills it and the Duvall, who has probably been the singer now longer than Layne was, is really phenomenal singing Layne’s material.

Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification. However, they still went to the top of the charts even if it was "only" a sub-genre. Maybe they could get the band back together and try to get on top of the white mans chart :tongue:

Stupid question: Once you allow 'R & B' aren't you opening the door to 'Hip Hop' in the R & R Hall of Fame?

By the way, KC & The Sunshine Band had four No. 1 hits on the Billboard R & B chart, and front man KC is only slightly less white than Bob Backlund.

That's the Way Uh Huh Uh Huh I Like It Uh Huh Uh Huh

Get Down Tonight.

During that 1975 Shea Stadium concert I mentioned in my Rufus post, K.C. and the Sunshine Band headlined. One of the greatest shows I've ever seen in my life. He did close to a 20 minute version of Get Down Tonight. You could see the cocaine residue sweating out of the bands pores. Just epic stuff. I'm not a fan of horn sections but K.C.'s was just unbelievable.
