I searched to see if we had a thread already but nothing came up, but man, that first season of True Detective I've been telling everyone for years is a must-see, it's some of the best television and well, overall ACTING I've ever seen in my life.  The 2nd season was a huge let down but this 3rd season, damn, never thought I'd say it or even thought they could pull it off but 5 episodes in it's better than Season 1 IMO.  Mahershala Ali is brilliant..

Does every season have different sets of characters?

The first season was great, the second season was so bad I stopped watching after 2 or 3 episodes. I haven't tried watching the 3rd season.

I'm where rossi is at. The first season is probably my favourite "season" of a show ever. The second one was so bad it surprised me they got clearance to do a third one, even a few years after the fact. I have read it's great (season 3) and I look forward to seeing it soon. Gotta get my movie network/hbo/crave sub back, probably in the next month or so.

I'm telling you, if Season 3 isn't as great as season 1, it's just as good. If you gave up on it after season 2 please give this season a try, you'll thank me for it..

Yep. Best advice I can give you is watch Season 1, then Season 3, skip Season 2.
Also, for everyone who hasn't watched it yet, Season 3 is so good I'm pissed I have to wait a week to watch new episodes, if I had known it was this good I would have probably waited until all 10 episodes had aired and then binged them all in a weekend marathon viewing..

I also think Season 3 is just as good or better than Season 1, BUT is it just me or does Ali’s character mumble a lot. Damn! I find myself having to go back two or three times trying make out what he said.

Great show thus far.

yeah, sometimes I've noticed that too but it works for the character...
also, damn, the makeup artists on this show deserve awards, they have him at 3 different ages and you BUY IT...doesn't look like makeup at all..

my wife and i are through episode 4 of season 3, and it is absolutely incredible! we will most likely watch episode 5 tomorrow night. totally agree with season 1 being amazing and season 2 being horrible.

it does suck having to wait a week. and i have no idea where the hell this season is going either!

Finale last night was a good wrap up to season 3. I won't spoil it right now for anyone that hasn't watched yet but I loved the hell out of it...

That was a quick season. Was that even 8 episodes?
