I personally can't stand the song. Messaging aside, I just think it's a terrible song.

I currently only encounter it on Sundays and special occasions (4th of July and Memorial Day). I don't stand or remove my hat, but it does depend on the environment.

Yet I was curious if something's changed, because I was in Cincinnati for Opening Day, this year, and the PA announcer instructed everybody to stand and remove their hats. I was traveling solo and didn't want to start a ruckus, so I complied. I noticed that all the Reds and Pirates players did so, as well. This struck me as odd.

Big tangent, but the Reds also broke another unofficial baseball tradition, earlier in the day. During their big Opening Day parade throughout downtown, someone had a float commemorating the Reds' World Series championships... and it was playing "We Are Family" on a loop. No team (or fans of a team) not-named-the-Pirates should ever play that song in public. Especially for a World Series reference.

This has been going on for years at Yankees games.  Everyone always stands and removes their hat or some drunken wannabe Marine will threaten to stab you.

All sides now go too far with everything. Everyone needs to calm down and worry more about their own lives and less about what some lady was singing 60 to 80 years ago. BTW - she didn't write the songs.

I used to laugh at the far right when they would make claims that eventually George Washington and Thomas Jefferson would be shunned because they were slaveowners. That idea doesn't seem so far fetched now.

As most her know, I am half black - my Father. I have always maintained that it is good to know history and understand the mistakes of history so we do not keep repeating them, but you have to live for the now and for the future. This means not obsessing over stupid shit like this.

Will Cain was hosting First Take on ESPN today and they did a discussion on this. He kept pointing out to Stephen A Smith and Max Kellerman that this is a dangerous precedent if we decide to just base EVERYTHING now off old previous history, as far as stuff like this, because at some point it's going to not be a black white thing but it's going to cover the entire spectrum of offense. He basically said "And I'm talking RECENT history, because there are a lot of heroes on the other side of the fence that were very against gays and gay rights, they're statues will need to come down too" and even mentioned President Obama as one of them. He's right, it's going to get so extreme that all of the sudden the real vocal ones about pulling down and stomping out history will be like "Oh, wait, I didn't mean THAT person..." but too late..

For the record, I am completely against the actions taken by the Yankees and Flyers.

You do know the Phillies were amazingly racist to Jackie Robinson in 1947? Worse than any other team. That is a fact. Should the Phillies be disbanded? Are we coming to that?

Some old, fat chick sang racially insensitive songs during a period when that tyoe of nonsense was widely promoted. We are now going to remove her from history in 2019? For that?

I can see having a conversation on why those stereotypes were so pervasive. Taking her statue away? WTF??

If the woman was a racist then I can see why they dropped her singing it.. Have someone else sing it. Its not that important. Its funny how it took this long to figure out she was. I never realized what a racist John Wayne was. I was never big on his movies anyway but now that will always change my view of him.

When I found out what a racist Dick Murdoch was I looked at him differently. And he didn't try and hide it. Is he in the wwe hall of fame? I have lost track.

Its a complicated issue because times have changed. What used to be acceptable is not anymore. By some anyways. When Trump became president you saw people start flaunting their bigoted views. It didn't go away. Someone came along and just made them openly proud of it. What a time we are in. Racism will never go away sadly. I think everyone knows someone who is. And some are probably friends with someone who is despite it.

I have looked deeper into this. As it turns out, the songs were actually supposed to be some subtle form of protest. That makes sense given that the activist Paul Robeson was on one of them. There is some completely made up bullshit on-line about Kate Smith now. She followed some avowed racist lady and so on. Just like the right does, the left will make something up, others start to "source it" and pretty soon the actual, bullshit source is about 300 clicks away and people believe it.

This issue is 100% horse shit.

I hear you but that is a completely different issue.  Apples to oranges.   I met an Eagles trainer in the late 80's at a bar who told me that Randall Cunningham was just another n++ger.
Now, that guy was a racist.  He is revered in Eagles history btw.  I am sure he said a lot of stuff to a lot of people.  It really doesn't matter now.
Kate Smith has NOT been proven to be anything other than an overweight singer who traveled far and wide for the U.S. military and had a couple of teams latch onto her.

Chances are, she was racist. Chances also are, I don't really care. Like I said, she was born in 1907 in Virginia. If you were born in 1907 in Virginia, you'd be racist too by today's standards. Anyone would. She was a relic of a different time, long before she died. In the '60s she was leading protests against the immorality of rock music. She loved Nixon and Nixon loved her. Together they hated hippies  and anyone who fucked and they liked blowing up commies. She was never a hip or cool or fun person at any stage of her life and she sure isn't 30 years after her death. None of this is the least bit surprising, and nothing has changed about her.  These are not revelations that anyone with Google didn't know last week.  And in another 50 years we'll all be seen as evil too as the times change.  The biggest abolitionists, reformers, and progressives from the 1700s-1900s, the ones who fought the hardest to make this country a better place for blacks long before any of us were born, would all be considered virulently racist by today's standards based on the language they used and some of their personal actions.  And we're surprised that Kate Smith of all people somehow doesn't live up to our standards of today?

I take offense to Kate Smith being described as a fat racist.
She was a pleasingly plump woman who just didn't have any friends of color.
I think all the statues that have been taken down or will be taken down to appease nutbars who think their piousness will get them into the Kingdom of Heaven( you're all worm food when you die you silly twats), should be sent to Trump. He can use them all to build his wall.

Racist statues , racist songs, old racist singers and actors, sports owners , politicians past and present should not be celebrated,   just because it's wrong. I am annoyed by the people that think racism is wrong depending on the situation. Lol  Mel Gibson is a racist piece of.....but people were still happy when they heard there might be a new lethal weapon movie. Lol its a uphill battle. People talk big but a lot dont care. If people generally dont care then.....or they care as long as it doesn't get in the way of their personal enjoyment. Nothing you can really do about it.   Racism is alive and well. A buddy of mine went to a NFL game and the racist language at the game in the stands was crazy. Hate crimes are through the roof, videos online of black people , Muslims, Mexicans being harassed. I have noticed it a lot more since Trump was elected. he sure did awaken something.

I suspect it's retroactive fat shaming under the guise of virtue signaling.
