Crossing the street here can be challenging any time, and you might be even less likely to notice that honking cab or zooming bicyclist if you're looking at your phone.

Now, it could become illegal to do so.

A bill in the New York State Senate seeks to ban pedestrians from using portable electronic devices while crossing the road. Fines would range from $25 to $250.

The statewide ban would include texting, checking emails, and browsing the internet, with exceptions for emergencies.

I'm tired of bullshit laws. If people want to be stupid, let them be stupid. And when they get hit by a car, it should be like it was in the US for 50+ years and how it is in so many other countries...CARS HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY. I am 200lbs and drive a car that's 2,000lbs. You don't have to tell me to NOT cross the street in front of a moving car, whether I have a crosswalk or not. It's gotten to the point that people don't even look before they cross, you can be doing 40 and somebody just slowly plops their way through the crosswalk and you have virtually no time to stop but still have to because they just don't care enough about themselves to look? My wife used to say "let them hit me, I need the money". Until we got into a car accident that put her in the hospital. Now she doesn't fuck around in OR out of a car. Because after our accident, we got a new car and about $3000 for pain and suffering, and four years later her back is still fucked and no amount of money will make it what it was.

What I was trying to say before I got really annoyed was that instead of making all these laws to protect morons, I say we should lift all the laws like this and then people will have to be held accountable for their own actions. You get injured in a car accident and you aren't wearing your seat belt? No, you shouldn't get a ticket - your car insurance company should say "fuck you, we won't pay because a seat belt would have saved you from being hurt". The legal system in the US is so fucked on things like this its just not funny anymore. Yeah, lets keep passing laws to try to fix stupid. You can't fix stupid.

They've been talking about this for a while. Forget the cyclists who don't obey any traffic laws, target the pedestrians. Anything to steal more money from the middle class to put it in the coffers of the rich and the government. NY is really tough to continue to live in.

I disagree with the illegal texting while walking bill, but I'm all for the illegal walking while texting bill.

You know how these crooks work. It's all how you write the bill, if it gets passed or not.

The NYPD will be in my thoughts and prayers as they take on this dangerous mission to help keep us safe. Their impeccable training will rid New York of these texting thugs within 30 days.

Now when they mistake a phone for a gun they can claim they feared for their lives either way.

Totally off topic, but just a little rant about cops in general since they were brought up. I was having dinner at a restaurant yesterday.  I watched them park in a red zone across the street, jaywalk across the street,  enter the same restaurant to eat, then jaywalk back across the street to leave. If I or any other John/Jane Q . Citizen did that it'd be a ticket and probably have their car towed. I thought about saying something but didn't want to get potentially tazed and/or arrested on some bullshit charge. Just another example of the whole "we enforce the law but don't have to abide by it" mentality of most officers.

LOL  BT has actually defended to the death in the past the cops' right to not obey basic traffic laws because "you wuzn't there" or something.  They are putting their lives on the line to save you every second of every day, even when it just LOOKS like they're speeding through a red light and parking in a handicap spot just to get to Dunkin Donuts faster.

Bet they got a "special gift" in their meal too. Either a loogi or a payoff.
