David Koch, billionaire conservative activist and philanthropist, has died. He was 79.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my brother David," Charles Koch said in a statement Friday. "Anyone who worked with David surely experienced his giant personality and passion for life."

David and Charles co-owned Koch Industries, a Kansas-based energy and chemical company, since 1983. David stepped down from running the Koch organization last year due to declining health.

The brothers tied as 11th richest in the world in a ranking by Forbes.

With the billions from their business, the Koch brothers helped to build a massive conservative network of donors for organizations that work to mobilize voters and sway elected officials in support of libertarian-leaning economic policies.

The network, led by the nonprofit Americans for Prosperity, has spent more than $1 billion over the past several elections to support candidates that adhere to their free-market, small government libertarian ideals.

The organization sometimes split with the GOP under President Donald Trump. It launched a multimillion dollar campaign last year promoting free trade and warning against tariffs.

David Koch, a prostate cancer survivor, also donated hundreds of millions of dollars to medical research. He was also a huge supporter of the arts in New York City, notably donating to Lincoln Center and $65 million to support a renovation of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

When Koch was diagnosed with cancer 27 years ago, he was given five years to live, his brother said.

"David liked to say that a combination of brilliant doctors, state-of-the-art medications and his own stubbornness kept the cancer at bay," the brother's statement said. "We can all be grateful that it did, because he was able to touch so many more lives as a result."

The Koch bros. philanthropic work is to be admired for sure. Politically, they're just more open borders/Chamber of Commerce types who have/had no real interests beyond their pocketbooks.

I always knew there was no real difference between a liberal and a Trump supporter, and the venom being spewed by both today on social media confirms that.  Very similar talking points, for sure.

I do not know where I fall into the spectrum of conservative and liberal labels, but I will say that this guy and his family have really had a negative impact on the future of this country with the rabid financing of such things as the Citizens United verdict in the Supreme Court and their attacks on the American worker.

I also have mixed feelings on the Cock brothers. What KGB said was spot on, but I gotta add this link. This especially hit home with me because this is where I lived for the first 35 years of my life. This area has an extremely high rate of cancer.

Examples of the social media trolling?  I think you can just log into Facebook and see them everywhere.

With him being from Wichita, we used to see a lot of pro Koch propaganda here in KC, with a lot of ad campaigns. Came of as quite the weasel, especially when trying to pump $$$ into reducing workers rights.

Here is the thing with the super rich, agenda driven assholes regardless of their political persuasions. They all think that because of their wealth, they can just roll over the rest of us. Money is NOT speech. It is money. The Koch’s, just because they could, spent tens of thousands of dollars a few years ago trying to influence the outcome of the Superintendent’s race for the Wake Co. NC Public School District. WTF? What legitimate interest did they have in a public school district in NC? No children there, no businesses there that I know of. Just being rich assholes.

I never thought I'd see the day where BT links to thinkprogress.

This is exactly what I'm saying about the overlap of the liberals and Trump supporters when it comes to the Koch hate.
