Is it just me, or have the Youtube ads become ridiculously over the top in recent days?  I swear there are times I'm getting commercial breaks every 2-3 minutes now.  It makes many videos unwatchable.

This is YouTube's biggest problem in my opinion. Not just the quantity of ads, but their placement. In the middle of sentences, even in the middle of words, because they aren't placed there by the content creators. They need to fix this if YouTube want to be competitor with TV.

From what I have heard, this seems to be an option that YouTube automatically turned on for every channel, and the owners of the channel need to go into their settings to get the ads back to where they were.

I use an ad blocker, though, which I guess is a bit of dick move, but there it is.

Because the ads I am blocking pay for the content I am getting. Any video I watch on YouTube, the creator would get some tiny fraction of a cent for each ad I get, but it all adds up. With the ad blocker, they get nothing.

YouTube was never really meant to replace regular TV, at least not initially. I’d guess that 99% of the stuff people watch on there is sub 5 minute clips of stuff where you only have to deal with 1 ad, and the kids are so used to it because it’s all they know. The only real show I’ve ever watched on YouTube was “Cobra Kai” at the beginning of quarantine and I signed up for the free month of their premium service and binged the whole thing in a week. I didn’t have to deal with ads then. I’d never want to watch real shows on the free YouTube.

Not today. There are many many many content creators making videos of all lengths. Most of the stuff I watch is more than 15 minutes, sometimes up to an hour. If the ads were in natural breaks in the videos, like on TV, I wouldn't have so much of a problem, but, as I said, they are just randomly placed.

Sounds like a fixable problem at least.

I disagree.  Lots of youtube use is a copyright breach, so using an adblocker prevents them from getting rewarded.

I watch lots of retro video and arcade game documentaries (for want of a better word). I'm not talking about old sports and wrestling.

Once you hit 1000 subscibers a youtube channel can add ads. They can add two ads for every 5 minutes of a video. The owner of the video can decline ads if he wants to.

There is a real estate guy with 750k subscribers. His channel is called Meet Kevin. This year real estate was slow so he took to making daily videos about the stimulus checks updates 3 times a day. In May 2018 Youtube paid him 2000.00 that month. In May 2019 he got 8000.00 for the month.
This May his videos were getting so many views May 2020 he got paid 260,000.00

The past few months I have noticed stuff that I watch gets interrupted so much that it isn't enjoyable

My guess is that it's a ploy by youtube TV, whenever the ads hit, a pop up emerges asking if I want to try youtube TV 30 days free with no ads. I click "no thanks".

Fucking Pony up and the $10 bucks or so it costs for YouTube premium and you don't have to watch their bullshit ads.
