Martin Bell, a BBC war correspondent, who stood for Parliament against Neil Hamilton, who had been caught up in various scandals, but would not resign his safe seat. The other candidates withdrew and Bell won. Sadly, Bell blotted his copybook at the next election. Having originally stood as an Independent against a Conservative in an election in which the Conservatives lost very heavily, he had the chance to do the same thing with a Labour candidate - and instead stood against another Conservative elsewhere. And lost heavily. Loads of non-politicians have run for Parliament here, usually as a protest or for some publicity. Very few ever win. The comedian Al Murray stood as a pro-EU candidate in Thanet South and got about 200 votes. Some get co-opted into the political system; double Olympic gold medallist Sebastian Coe for instance became a Conservative MP.

By gawd, King, whattabout KANE!?! KANE! Joe Walsh once ran for Vice President. No running mate. he just ran for VP. Joe Exotic. Sonny Bono. Kanye West was on the ballot in my state, this year. Ronald Reagan. Although you can safely say that he switched, entirely, to politics long before he ran for President. He was well removed from his TV and movie days, when he ran. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Howard Stern ran for governor of NY in the 90's. I think his platform was that he wanted to get in, re-instate the death penalty, then immediately abdicate. I think he dropped out because he didn't want to publicly disclose his financials. Al Franken, best known as "former SNL political comedian" made the switch. Until he resigned over sexual misconduct allegations, a few years ago. Former professional athletes Jack Kemp (NFL) and Jim Bunning (MLB) had long runs as politicians after their playing days were over. Fred Gandy ("Gopher" from the Love Boat) had a few terms as Iowa's rep in the 90's. I suppose you could argue that some of the early Presidents weren't politicians.
