Pulled the idea for this thread from Rolling Stone's rock blog. Here's my top five:

1. Wilco - Sky Blue Sky

2. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible

3. Springsteen - Magic

4. The Shins - Wincing the Night Away

5. Kings of Leon - Because of the Times

Wow, I don't think I could name five albums that came out this year, period.

Rush--Snakes and Arrows. Great album that many people won't listen to just because it's Rush.

That's a shame because it's really good.

Not a lot of "big" names put out anything this year. But it's been a great year for more mid-card, indie bands.

Me too, so I'm gonna say Kid Rock's latest, because All Summer Long kicks ass.

Sixx A.M. is the Nikki Sixx thing right? Exodus gave us Kirk Hammett. I still listen to Bonded by Blood on occasion. I would like to check out both of these.

Right there's your #2.  This ain't even a discusion.  I'm not the biggest Rush fan, but damn good album and in a year where not a lot came out...

It'd be the best if Scorpions - Humanity:Hour I hadn't been released.  Best Scorpions album in over 20 years - just phenomenal top to bottom.  If you haven't picked this up yet, do so.  Seriously.

Hell they can sell it better than I can

Scorpions, Rush, and nothing else really IMO this year.  Unless I'm forgetting one.

I picked that one up, but it didn't make my top 5. Good album, though.

EDIT: I was supposed to quote khawk on Rush's Snakes and Arrows.

I like the first list. The Shins, Kings and Arcade Fire would be in my top 5. Not sure if Ry Cooders' 'Buddy' album was this year but that would be in my top 5 as well. Struggling to pick the 6th but maybe Arctic Monkeys.

Down - Over the Under
As I Lay Dying - An Ocean Between Us

I also like what I've heard off A Life Once Lost's new one, Iron Gag.

Yep, it's Nikki Sixx and two other guys.  The vocalist is great.

Check out a few songs from the myspace page - http://www.myspace.com/nikkisixx

And for Exodus, http://www.myspace.com/exodus (check out the tune Children of a Worthless God)

And I'd highly recommend checking out some of the Machine Head stuff (if you've ever heard of the band Vio-lence, it has two former members).

http://www.myspace.com/machinehead (especially the track "Halo", but every one they have up is great.)

As a matter of fact, Machine Head was just nominated for a Grammy for best record for the song Aesthetics of Hate.
