I am thinking I was about 8 years old. Read in an Encyclopedia that Santa was a fictional character. Yep, just looked up Santa and there it was.

I ask though because of my neighbor's daughter. I think she is five or six years old. She is a smart cookie. She was questioning the "all the houses in one night" thing with me today.

The she asked me if Rudloph was real.

"He is as real as Santa is" - I mean, what are you gonna so? Say "Hey kid you are getting werked by a werker"

What?!  My God, Santa's a work too?!  Dusty was right, it's all fake!

I really can't remember.  I guess 7 or 8 sounds about right.  But I was questioning long before that.  There was this hotline when I was a kid that would tell you where Santa was at any given time.  He's flying over Omaha, now he's in Switzerland, blah, blah, blah.  I was no geography expert at 5, but I was pretty skeptical.  And the whole thing about the Santa at the Macy's Parade being the real one but all the ones in the stoes being his "helpers", yeah, that wasn't sitting too well with me either.

But I remember when I was about 3 telling my mom that the Easter Bunny at the bank was a guy in a costume, so Santa made it longer than he did.

I think I was 6 or 7, but I played along with the work for the presents.

I think that's what my oldest, who's 9, is doing with me right now.  I don't mind, as I'd rather have her pretend she believes than let me know she's  grown beyond it.

Same with my 9 year old.  I was bitchin' about her leaving her guitar on the floor.  I said, "Mom and I bought you a stand so you wouldn't leave it on the floor."

She gave me a knowing look and said, "Don't you mean Santa brought me a stand?"

I played dumb, because my wife does all the shopping and said, "Oh I thought mom picked that out."

My wife gave me the "Nice one, dumbass, look."

Six or seven.

Dad came right out and said that there wasn't a Santa Claus, but I'd be getting the same amount of presents as before. Worked for me.

He also told me not to tell my little cousin because he still probably believed. I kept my mouth shut, not for the benefit of my cousin but because even at that age I knew my aunt would have killed me. There had already been enough trouble when another cousin of mine and I taught him some mildly inappropriate Christmas songs.

My nine year old daughter has the game pretty well figured out.  She's still playing along, too.
