I like Bret Favre.

And I agree, I like Bret Favre too.  I could give two shits what he does in the offseason and I would do the same damn thing as him if I were in his shoes.

You'd purposely screw over your employer who pays you millions and kisses your ass just so you can get increased media attention each year (screw the skipping offseason workout crap, he could still do that and tell the team if he's coming back or not)? Why?

Also, I'd hate Favre on my team because I KNOW he's going to choose to try and make crazy plays late in important games "because it's fun," and no doubt, for people to say "look what Brett Favre did" rather than do what's right to win the game. He's done it time and time again.  That selfishness makes him fun to watch to some, but the fact remains is that he will screw his team on and off the field in exchange for "look at Brett Favre!"

I'm not saying I would do it for the purpose of media attention or screwing over my employer or pissing off my co-workers.  But if somebody is willing to pay me more when I "said" I'm done working for them even if you're just playing them then that is also the fault of the employer.  I'm not saying I agree with what he does, simply that regardless of what he does off the field I am still a fan of his on the field.  Whether you agree or disagree with it the man got what he wanted and will earn more money at the same time.  In a strictly business sense, it's hard to argue with the game he has played: work less and make more money as they beg you to come back and work for them.

But that's not all he's doing. He could simply retire early in the year and still make them beg him back. Then he can tell them he isn't going to do training camp and if they think he's worth it, like the clearly do, they'll agree to it.  I don't see how playing the game he plays and putting everything off till the last minute is necessary. The team knows they want him back, they know he doesn't want to come to camp, there is no reason for games. Make your demands and the team will meet them. He's doing something different than that.  The rest is simply "look at me" just like throwing a cross body pass to the middle of the field against a ball hawking D in the last seconds of a championship game rather than diving forward & hitting the ground (or throwing out of bounds) so your great kicker (& friend) can ice it is a "look at me" move.

Oh I agree with you, and I'm not saying that I agree with everything he does.  Basically, I don't concern myself much with what he does off the field.  Of course I follow what he does throughout every offseason because it's impossible to turn on the TV and not hear his name, but his actions don't get under my skin like they do some other people.  Do I understand why some people can't stand the guy or the games he plays?  Of course.  But I am a fan of his and while he should probably take the route you suggested above during the offseason instead of his yearly routine, I do not believe he will ever do that.  Is he an attention-whore?  Of course, and at the same time the media doesn't help matters by following every move the guys makes on and off the field feeding into his ego.  I don't have much of a reason why I like the guy, but I do, and unless he goes Michael Vick and commits some type of henious crime I will probably support the guy until he retires (which I actually believe will happen after this season (no really, I do)).
