By ESPN accounts (I know that's not saying much there) they were heartbroken when Lee was traded. The guy took about 1/3 less to back there. That should be proof enough. If the "spitting incident" was that much of a determining factor, why did the Rangers also have no shot? They rolled out the red carpet for Lee. Because Lee wants to be a Phillie. Nothing wrong with that, and I actually applaud the guy for putting his family over the contract.
