Action Outside Wrestling Ring Hospitalizes Man
One man was admitted to St. Francis Hospital and another treated when a fight broke out at McElroy Auditorium Saturday night after the wrestling matches. Two off-duty policemen at the Auditorium reported the incident to police headquarters about 11 p.m. According to police, the last tag team match had just ended and the teams were leaving the ring to go to the dressing rooms when one of the wrestlers was hit by a spectator. Police said Harley L. Race, 27, of Overland, Kans., had just stepped out of the ring when a spectator hit him in the face with the iron bell used to begin and end rounds. Race, in turn, slugged the spectator and knocked him down. The spectator, Joseph Wiedner, 31, of 1246 W. Mullan, was admitted to St. Francis Hospital with a concussion and a laceration above the eye. After getting dressed, Race also went to the hospital where doctors said some damage had been done to his nasal passages, but that his nose was not broken. Race wrestles under the billing of Handsome Harley Race. No arrests were made.
