Time Warner Cable
The broadband and cable giant recently announced it will begin charging customers $3.95 per month to lease a cable modem. Time Warner joins a list of other Internet biggies to do so, including Cox, Comcast, and Bright House. Although Time Warner and other companies allow customers to purchase and install their own modems outright, less-tech-savvy folks might be reluctant, assuring the companies a steady stream of extra revenue.

Just had that argument with them a few weeks ago.  Raised holy hell about paying for the modem as well as their service in general (including being accidentally hung up on twice after holding for ages) and as I got more pissed as the conversation went along, I basically told them to get all their boxes because I wasn't going to use them anymore.  Got transferred to a "retention specialist" and wound up not only getting the $3.95 waived but also got my Triple Play package extended for another year at a discount.  My bill went from $172 to about $158 now.  You just have really battle these people and they'll almost always give in.
