Toronto Blue Jays prospect Anthony Alford has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault following a fight Wednesday morning on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi.

According to the University police department, Alford -- a freshman quarterback at the school and a third round draft pick by the Blue Jays in the 2012 amateur draft -- and another student engaged in a fight that involved two guns.

The university's newspaper, The Student Printz, reported Thursday the two men were held in Forrest County Jail without bond Wednesday night.

Both Alford and the other student arrested have been placed on interim suspension, with expulsion a possibility, according to the university's dean of students.

Alford was ranked 36th in Baseball America's pre-draft ranking, but he slipped to the third round (112th overall) over fears he wouldn't sign in order to pursue a career in football.

Following the draft, the Blue Jays signed Alford to a deal that would allow him to play football at Southern Mississippi University in the fall, and baseball in the Blue Jays minor league system once the school year ended.

After signing with Toronto, Alford appeared in five games this past summer with the Blue Jays' Gulf Coast League affiliate before heading to Southern Mississippi to play football.

A Blue Jays spokesperson said Thursday the club is aware of the incident involving Alford but they do no comment on matters before the court.
