Lloyd McClendon will be the new manager of the Seattle Mariners, a team source with knowledge of the decision told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.

McClendon, 54, has been with the Detroit Tigers since 2006, serving as their hitting coach starting in 2007.

He managed the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2001-05 and previously interviewed for the Mariners job in 2010.

The Puget Sound Business Journal earlier reported the news.

McClendon replaces Eric Wedge, who walked away from the team due to a difference of opinion with the Mariners front office. Wedge had a 212-272 record as Mariners manager.

The Mariners went 71-91 last season, finishing fourth in the AL West, and haven't had a winning season since 2009.
