The St. Louis Cardinals and manager Mike Matheny have agreed to a three-year contract extension, the team announced Wednesday.

Matheny, whose extension will run through the 2017 season, managed the Cardinals to a 97-65 record and an appearance in the World Series this past season.

"I love what I do," Matheny said during a news conference to announce the extension. "But to do it here in a place I call home is extremely special. ... I'm very grateful."

Matheny, 43, has compiled a 185-139 record in two years with the Cardinals, who hired the former catcher to replace longtime manager Tony La Russa following the 2011 season.

A 13-year veteran as a player, Matheny also was a member of the Cardinals team that lost to the Boston Red Sox in the 2004 World Series.

Boston defeated St. Louis in this year's World Series; it was the Cardinals' fourth World Series appearance in the last 10 years.
