The St. Louis Cardinals have signed manager Mike Matheny to a three-year contract extension, the club announced Thursday.

Over his five seasons on the Cardinals' bench, Matheny has compiled a 461-349 record, averaging 92 wins per season - the most among all MLB managers since 2012.

"Mike has continued the Cardinals tradition of winning in his first five years as manager and we are happy to extend his contract leading our club on the field through 2020," Cardinals CEO Bill DeWitt, Jr. said.

The club also announced that Cardinals' Class A manager Oliver Marmol has been promoted to Major League first-base coach, while Triple-A Memphis manager Mike Shildt was promoted to Cardinals' quality control coach.

All remaining coaches will return to their respective roles in 2017 with the exception of assistant hitting coach Derrick May, who will not rejoin the club.

As the Cardinals manager, the team has never finished lower than second place in the National League Central, while winning the NL Pennant in 2013.

Matheny also finished second in NL Manager of the Year voting in 2015.
