The Philadelphia Phillies declined Ryan Howard's $23-million club option, as well as Charlie Morton's $9.5-million club option, for the 2017 season, the team announced Thursday.

Not bringing back Howard doesn't come as much of a surprise after the worst season of the slugger's career. In his 13th season with the Phillies, Howard slashed .196/.257/.453 with 25 home runs and 114 strikeouts in 112 games.

Despite his best years being behind him, the 36-year-old still has some pop in his bat, clubbing at least 23 homers in each of his last three seasons.

Morton underwent season-ending surgery in late April after suffering a severe hamstring tear. He'll get a $1-million buyout from the Phillies.
