I'm sure it depended on geography and age. Most long-time fans still perceived the AWA as pretty major league in late '86, although the glory days were certainly in the rear view. But they were only a couple of years removed from still being really good, and even in early '86 they didn't seem near dead, so it could've easily been explained away as a bump in the road. I don't think it was until mid to late '87 that most AWA fans came around to the fact that the company was done. You still got to see them on ESPN and in most parts of the country you might only know about the UWF from the magazines, or maybe not at all.
