I think the idea is that “cheap” heat = “lazy” heat. Anyone can go out and insult the Celtics or Bruins, but a good heel can piss off the fans by what he says about the good guys within the storyline. We are living in a different era though, so those rules almost don’t even exist anymore since “storylines” and suspension of disbelief don’t exist as they used to, and it seems the crowd has now made itself a character or part of the show.

Anyway, back to the original question, the greatest example that comes to mind is when Piper fought Bruno in a cage in Boston in Jan 1986 and brought out posters of Jim McMahon and Fridge Perry to tape up on the cage. This was right after Super Bowl XX when the Bears beat the Pats.
