There was no explanation in the newspapers, only that Berger would take on "all-comers" for an hour. He beat the first four in 15 minutes, then Collins was disqualified, and the whole thing ended in less than 20.

I don't think these guys were local wrestlers, not audience plants. I don't know about the rest of the country, but in the Southwest, there would be public workouts in the days building up to the matches, so each town had a small crew of sparring partners who also worked short matches to open cards (short for the time, so 15-20 minutes, a long match today). My guess is that the local promoter had three main event wrestlers available, so came up with this as something different for the first card of the year. Wrestling never changes though... advertise a one hour match and run a fucked finish so it only goes 20 minutes.
