There's a nauseating expose in Sports Illustrated that I had never heard of before about the Saints and their connection to the Archdiocese of New Orleans, which has protected dozens if not hundreds of pedophile priests over the decades.

First of all, I never knew the story of Saints and Pelicans owner Gayle Benson.  I guess she was a religious fanatic and interior designer who married a corpse and waited 10 years for him to die, taking over the teams and getting assistance directly from the Church to cut the owner's first wife and children out of the will to ensure they would get nothing.  That was bad enough.

But the expose is about the Saints assistance to the Church to grant free PR and legal aid and help them cover-up a sex abuse scandal.  It really has to be read to be believed.  One of the victims is the daughter of original Saints linebacker Steve Stonebreaker, who at the age of 4 was digitally and orally raped by a priest who was driving her home from preschool.  Stonebreaker killed himself many years ago in what is thought to be an early CTE case before anyone knew what that was, so this is a double-whammy for her.  First she lost her father, then his team helped cover up her sex abuse.

Benson insists that they did nothing except offer some PR advice, but there are hundreds of e-mails under subpoena between the team and the archdiocese that don't line up with her timeline of events and being held confidentially by the courts.  The legal proceedings were put on hold last month when the archdiocese filed  bankruptcy and there's little hope of the victims getting paid now.

The kicker is that Benson donated $62 million to the archdiocese but the state is funding a renovation of the Superdome to the tune of $90 million, so basically taxpayers were funding the archdiocese, and now they're still claiming they're broke.
The NFL, gutless as always, refused comment other than to say that they are monitoring how the situation plays out in court.  The victims want Benson fined or possibly ousted for "conduct detrimental to the league", but that's not going to happen.

This thread was great before AA ruined it.
