That may sound a bit neanderthal, but I miss when games were played with genuine bad blood and hate when rivals clashed. Now everyone is friends and co-millionaires, and it shows in the product in both intensity and the rule changes and structure of the games.

The intensity has become ritualized.  They substituted personalized celebrations, chest pounding, and get-me-on-Sportscenter routines to show how allegedly focused they are.  Did guys like Bobby Clarke, Jack Lambert, or Pete Rose need crap like that?  Nope.  You just knew they would step over their own mother to win a game.  It showed in their faces and the way they played the game.
