I went back to look through some old newspapers to look at the reviews of and reactions to Van Halen when they first broke out in 1978. A very interesting quote turned up.

This is from the The Utah Daily Chronicle, the student newspaper at the University of Utah, in its May 3, 1978 edition. It's their review of Van Halen's debut album.

"...while microphone extension David Roth redefines Jim Dandy and grafts Sammy Hagar onto his own distinctive vocal hijinks."
