Thought it would be fun to kick this around. The talk of Patterson winning the I-C tourney in Rio De Janeiro cracked me up. How about some other phantom title changes, events or tournaments that got "accepted" but never actually happened.

One that came to mind for me immediately was Killer Khan breaking Andre The Giant's leg in a match in Boston. Or maybe it was upstate New York. Pretty sure the truth is Andre hurt the leg himself.

Andre fell out of bed.  I believe they showed footage of Khan putting Andre's leg on the bottom rope and jumping on it and pretended that's where the break occurred.

Hansen breaking Bruno's neck with The Lariat.

Speaking of Patterson and the I-C championship, how about him throwing the North American belt off of the Golden Gate Bridge?

The Rock & Roll Express regaining the NWA Tag Team championship from Rick Rude & Manny Fernandez. I think they showed a video clip of a match before Rude & Manny had the belts to "show that it happened".

If this thread was posted on OSW, J.D. McKay would write "Evolution".  But I digress.

Wasn't the last phantom title change Lenny Lane" losing" the Cruiserweight title after GLAAD made WCW take him off TV?

Hansen *did* break Bruno's neck in a match, but it was from a fucked up bodyslam and not the Lariat.

The best part about the RnR's/Rude-Fernandez switch is that they claimed the match happened in Alaska or some other far off place JCP never came close to touring in.

Which was retarded, they had house shows all over the place and could easily have had a genuine match, some grainy home footage sourced for Nitro and used it to explain "a title change can happen anytime and anywhere" to boost business.

WCW used to do the Disney taping things of having tag teams lose the belts before they even won them.  Freebirds and Bunkhouse Buck/Dick Slater spring to mind.  Technically the events themselves happened, but on any normal understanding of the laws of thermodynamics they could not.

Sgt Slaughter & Don Kernodle claimed the NWA Tag Team championship by virtue of a tournament victory in Tokyo over Giant Baba & Antonio Inoki. Yeah, okay.

- Mike Von Erich separating his shoulder in a match "at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit".
- The Patriot winning the inaugural GWF world title tournament at a tournament in Barcelona, Spain.
- Black Bart beating Chris Adams for the WCCW title "in California" (Adams refused to drop the belt before going off to serve his prison term).

How bullshit is that?  Maybe he wanted to be booked as the champ in prison.

Weren't there fake satelite tournaments to get into the Crockett Cup?

Back in 1983 in Southwest, they were planning a tourney for the real world champion.  Lou Thez was even carted out for it with his old belt.  I rememeber Steve Stack and Lou talking about how promoters all over were wanting to have the tourney in their city.  It wound up being held in Houston, what a suprise.

Didn't WCW have several weird tag title changes in 1995? I think there was at least one negative title reign and perhaps a relabeled or fictitious switch. I recall something involving the Nasty Boys.
