Stupid question.

Was 'Gorgeous George' ever considered to be a 'world title contender' or was his schtick so 'over the top' that they would never do that kind of a thing with him?

Beej,

You got to remember during George's national exposure heyday, Lou Thesz was NWA World champion. So you probably answered the question. Lou did not go for that nonsense, and neither did Sam Muchnick. Thesz had a few matches with him, but nothing to the point where George would be consider heir apparent.

Also George didn't need to title.

One thing people also need to remember when they ask if so and so was considered to be champ. The guys that did become a champ, was someone's boy. And they needed serious backing. Once George got hot, most of the promoters had a love/hate relationship with him. He got very demanding, of course he was worth it. But promoters did not care for him when he would request a huge percentage of the gate. They loved him when filled up their buildings but hate him when he wanted his fair share.

Dbaker, did you review the handwritten Gorgeous George record book that is placed inside the miscellaneous number 4 folder of the archives on the pro wrestling history website ? My eyesight is finally starting to go , and it is difficult for me to cross reference with the list ...but there does seem to be many additions you could make to your existing base of information .

I have not been able to confirm this but I came across a clipping, wrote it down. But now cannot find the clipping of Gorgeous George making his Arena Mexico debut on June 15, 1939.

Now I've heard that GG went down to Mexico and worked but have not seen any confirmation on it.
