I brought up the Francisco Flores thread a few days ago, so I thought I would throw out the name of Carlos Rocha.

This guy came to the WWWF in 1977.

He was billed as the great Portuguese Champion.

He actually got a title shot against Superstar Billy Graham at the Providence Civic Center. Evidently, Providence has a sizable Portugese population so they cashed in on it. Rocha got a lukewarm midcard push around the rest of the horn for a while.

The only other place I've seen results for Rocha is Toronto. He got a main event against the Sheik there IIRC.

Yes . Rocha had a feud with The Sheik in Toronto in '72 when Farhat was on fire up there. He was billed as Portuguese Champion then as well. Gary Will's site lists three mains at MLG and the place was packed.

What is odd is they were pushing and making it a Champion vs Champion match, with only Grahams title on the line.  It was actually advertised as a battle of the champions.

Rocha seemed pretty old by his 1977 shot WWWF run.  I recall seeing him on one HBO televised MSG card back then mostly beat jobbers on TV is the majority of what i saw of him.

in addition to Toronto he also had a good run in Quebec early 70's feuding with Abdullah among others, he was one of those guys that looked older than he was - like Gagne - although he would have been fairly long in the tooth by the late 70's, we have talked about him on the Toronto boards and no-one gets it, imagine he was a star overseas

I think he was in his 50's in 1977, so he was not that young, if I am correct.

Could not figure this guy out when he first came into the WWWF.  He just didnt fit the bill.  I have never heard anything about his past.

I remember him and Flores.  WWWF had a habit of bringing in guys and giving them Phantom titles (Waldo Von Erich-European Champion).  But if the guy didn't wear a belt, and didn't make regular defenses of their "titles", fans smelled the BS and ignored them.

Rocha was OK in the ring as I remember-but he was nothing special.  He had no major fan base that I recall.  Rocha had a push in Vancouver.  he feuded with Gene Kiniski and had a good following there.

My Portuguese neighbour here in Toronto STILL talks about Rocha and what he meant to the local Portuguese population back in the day. I found him a photo of Rocha a few years back.
