The winner was MSG Aug 24 1981. Has anyone seen this match? The only match between these two I can find is the Nov 14 1981 stretcher match from the Spectrum. It was on Best of WWF Vol 4 and included on the Judgement Day 2003 DVD

The match that "won" doesn't exist on video. Most people just widely accept the Stretcher Match from Philadelphia (the only Stretcher Match that exists on video besides maybe some choppy 8 mm clip) as the blow-off to the feud.

You are referring to Backlund/Muraco, right?  If not, I apologize.

I don't understand how they awarded Backlund/Muraco that accolade, and I am a fan of both.  That match series was great but what had me way more excited was the Patterson/Slaughter series from MSG in April/May.  Shorter matches, no technical wrestling, but probably two of the best workers in the world and unreal heat.  I have still never seen a better brawl (more realistic) in a wrestling ring.

I think Peters1977 was referring to the PWI Match of the year for 1981. Most people (myself included) assumed when they named the Andre vs Khan Strecther Match as the match of the year it was the one that was broadcast from the Spectrum (and since has popped up on WWF Home Video)

I'm not even sure they specified exactly which match they awarded the honors to, but if you go on Wikkipedia they have the Andre-Khan MSG Stretcher Match as the winner, but I don't see how it won (how many people could have possibly seen this?)

Yes I know the (voting) awards were "worked"

ok, I get it now

but the winner is 5/2/81 Rochester NY, according to Wiki

I really can't believe the Andre-gets-his-leg-broken kayfabe angle pulled off match of the year honors from PWI

WWF @ Rochester, NY - May 2, 1981
Arnold Skaaland defeated Johnny Rodz via disqualification
Andre the Giant vs. Killer Khan; Khan was credited with breaking Andre's ankle during this bout

Wrestling Observer gave the nod to Patterson/Slaughter alley fight, as they should have

other than that, the PWI list is pretty cool and I have some of them

would love to see Dory-Race 5/24/73 and Jack Brisco-Race 1/27/74

and the Bruno/Arion match that won 1975 was the second match of the feud 3/17, not the widely available blowoff match from 4/15

Cawthorn's site doesn't list a time or result for that one?

anyone know the details?

From what I read in the past, I don't think that MSG match was a stretcher match.  I think it was a two referee/ No DQ match to control the action (believe the refs were Monsoon and Patterson for this match).  I could be totally wrong about this because I didn't live in NY area and I read this second hand.  I do know this was the rematch to the previous month's card.  We got the stretcher match down here at the Cap Centre as well. (I believe it was on the undercard of the Backlund/Muraco broadway).

I have a Bruno vs Arion MSG match on tape from 1975 that I have never been able to attach a date to. Ends in a double DQ. Anyone know if it is the "Match Of the Year" match?

They were never as worked as anyone thinks.  Usually the "number of votes" had a couple digits added to the end, or a one added to the front.  Or they were completely made up.

But as far as the results went, 1-2-3-4...they were legit 90% of the time.

Just happened to be moving some boxes around and that PWI issue was in one of them. They never say a date or the arena in the article. In fact, the description is generic enough that it probably could apply to many of the matches they had around the horn. They do mention Khan being put on a stretcher and Andre attacking him. However...

That's right. The picture they have accompanying the article is with Gorilla Monsoon and Pat Patterson raising Andre's arms, and that would have been the MSG 8/24/81 Texas Death match with them as double special referees.

It is also funny to note, as well regarded as the Slaughter vs. Patterson MSG "Alley Fight" match is today, and also that the mags were based out of NYC and covered MSG so heavy, it didn't even make it onto the list.

1). Andre vs. Khan (MSG 8/24/81 we assume)
2). Flair vs. Rhodes (Flair wins title)
3). Muraco vs. Backlund (60min. draw, also 8/24 MSG)
4). Micheal Hayes vs. Terry Gordy

Note they did not give any dates or venues for these matches, except mentioning MSG for the Muraco vs. Backlund match.
