There has been some discussion about the things that McMahon was looking for when he went out to replace Bruno with a new face champion.  Some have said Vince wanted somebody along the lines of Jack Brisoc to come in as a champ and to steer away from the "ethnic" type of champion.

Couple of questions...

Would Brisco have worked well in the WWWF?

From what you have seen, do you think Brisco would have been about the same as Backlund, worse than Backlund, or better than Backlund?

Yes. He was a big name.

Brisco would have played the role just fine and would have been a good pick, Maybe the best one. DiBiase would have worked. Not as well as Brisco because jack really was a much bigger name.

Going the other direction but the crowds loved Dusty Rhodes. He would have worked. Definitely not in the "given mold" though.

I think I would disagree with you.  From what I have seen of Brisco, he bored me.  To me, the guy lacked emotion.  I think for all of Backlund's perceived faults, he would have been a better selection than Brisco.

Brisco was a bigger (national) name. I doubt he was available for a six year title reign but if he was I would have went there because he had cedibility already established. Whether or not he would have worked out better than Backlund is another story. I never got the impression the list of names to beat Graham and follow Bruno was very long.

According to some, McMahon went searching before Graham even captured the belt.  It sounds like he really did not have a list of names, and spoke to people like Eddie Graham about who some of the possibilities could have been.  They have said that McMahon was looking for a guy like Brisco from the heartland of the U.S.

It was planned too far in advance with no flexibility because the logical thing to do would've been to keep the belt on Graham and turn him face.  But apparently Backlund got promised the belt at some point and they ignored how over Graham was getting.

Not my opinion but just from things that I have heard, srossi, is that McMahon knew that Superstar's skills were limited and that he wanted a guy who could go for a long match if the need arose.  He wanted a diverse champion in regards of what he could do with him.

Odeest name I've ever heard get considered for the run that Backlund got is Steve Keirn.

I like Kiern and I respect his skills, but I cannot imagine him having a run with the WWWF belt at all.

Yep, Keirn's name surprised me, also.

Sounds to me that the profile (clean cut Anerican) may have been what they wanted more than anything else.

Kerin is surprising but he actually was a bigger name than Backlund at that time.

Both Keirn and Mike Graham were bigger names than Backlund at the time.  I have read that McMahon Sr. was concerned with SBG's health even back in the late 70's.  I am not sure what the basis for any concern would have been since steriods were not even mentioned during that time.

Looking back now, it is easy to say that Brisco would have been too vanilla to hold the belt for 6 years.  Could anyone have been more vanilla than Backlund?  I think Brisco could have done a good job with the belt.  I have seen his work against against Funk Jr. and the guy could emote when the situation called for that.  He did not go overboard like Backlund who would cry after every screw job loss on Prism.  Of course, he never lost the belt since it would always be a count out or a match stopped due to blood loss.

I can see Brisco holding the line for the WWWF, but I think they were looking for some type of a fresh face.   I have not seen a lot of footage of Brisco, and I still do not know if he was cut out for the WWWF.  For all of Backlund's overboard emotions, I did think some of that caught on with a section of the fans.  Brisco just seemed to lack the charisma for the WWF.  That seemed to be more accepted in the NWA.

Superstar Billy Graham, from all the matches I've seen of him as WWWF Champ (most being from The Garden), was as over as any heel could possibly be at that time.  The place was ELECTRIC when he came out of the curtain, and stayed electric for the whole match.  He was the toast of the town, and I think they screwed up royally by taking his belt.  No reason in the world he couldn't have held the title through '79 and go a different direction starting the '80s.  He could have turned face, lost the title to a Valentine/Muraco type, who could lose it quick to Backlund if that's what the plan was going to be in the first place...it automatically gives the guy that beats Graham some heel credibility as a "Former WWWF Champ", and makes the start of the Backlund reign have some excitement to it, because Backlund would have had another full year to make a name for himself at the top of the card.  Whatever...that was 30 years ago.
