With the males you hit the names like Flair, Austin, Hogan, Race, Thesz, etc

Is there a women wrestler that most perceive as "the best ever"? Tough question because I think the tendency may be to go international on this one.

Absolutely, none of the Americans come close.  Moolah, Byers, Grable, etc. quite frankly didn't do much from what I've seen.  Best female wrestler who was a regular here is Trish Stratus and I really don't think it's very close.

In America among active women I'd say Sara Del Ray.  SHIMMER puts on some damn good shows, I've seen a few of their DVDs and I'm pretty impressed.

But internationally I love so many of them: Megumi Kudo, Aja Kong, Chigusa Nagayo and Lioness Asuka (Crush Girls), Devil Masami, Jumping Bomb Angels, Momoe Nakanishi, Akira Hokoto, Dump Matsumoto, The ZAPs, Chaparrita Asari.

Funny thing is that for all the jokes about the hot chicks today sucking cock to win Diva Searches and stuff like that to get in the business, the truth is  that none of them probably did but there's TONS of documented evidence that dozens of girls really did need to sleep with (or marry) Billy Wolfe and other promoters to get a job back in the day.  All the "real" women's athletes (none of whom seemed very athletic) slept their way into the business pre-1970 and that's just fact.

Funny, because it's true.

I think that's all a function of internet though. (The cover-ups of years ago would have never stayed covered up)

I think Victoria and Molly Holly are/were outstanding as female wrestlers go, and were better in the ring than Trish.  Trish got a lot better over time, but those other two could outperform the men.

Victoria has been terrible since Trish Stratus retired.  Trish was really much better than we gave her credit for at the time.

Trish was about the 2nd best heel in all of wrestling (behind HHH) for a while there on the mic and with the subtle things she'd do.  She easily outperformed almost all the men.

Since Trish is getting so much love in this "Greatest Ever" thread, I'll throw out Mickie James. ;)

Seriously, who the hell was the best female wrestler ever?

Well, if you can believe everything you read in the rasslin' magazines of my youth, a woman named Mildred Burke was the best thing since sliced bread.  And no, I have never seen her and know nothing of her other than that.  Well, that and I remember seeing some picture of her looking all burly and muscular.

For those interested, there is some WWII era footage of Mildred Burke on this clip at about the 6:40 mark, which features the commentary of her giving her opponent a "tummy massage and a facial":http://youtube.com/watch?v=8R0pfvZKNiY

Btw, entering the name "Mildred Burke" in the Youtube Mr. Searchy turns up a few 60s era fetishy silent films of small men rassllin' against burly women.  I'll leave explaining that to others....

I'll add Manami Toyota, Aja Kong and Bull Nakano.

Not to mention Moolah's "trainees".

I really have no idea about "best ever", but I really like Wendi Richter's work when I see old footage. Back then, I liked her because she looked better than most of those women, but looking back at a lot of stuff she did Pre-Rock'n'Wrestling, I really like her. She wrestles rough and mean and clearly has more charisma than the other girls of that time. She also had that huge moment of stardom in 84/85.  She probably gets tops on my personal list of those I've watched (I like Sherri too), but I've only seen very limited Japanese stuff and really haven't seen enough of Trish or the newer girls' work to judge them.  I've seen Molly Holly as much as any of the modern ones and I like her.

Sherri and Trish are the only two that come to mind that were exceptionally good at what they do. What's funny is most people remember Sherri as a manager (and she was great at that), but she was probably the best wrestler of her era as well. At least some of the women Trish worked with could hold their own, Sherri had less than nothing to work with most nights in the AWA.

It takes two to tango though, Victoria hasn't really had much to work with in Kelly Kelly and Michelle McCool.

She was bad before the switch to SD when she wrestled Mickie & such.
