I've learned I tend to really appreciate and enjoy the simple things in pro wrestling.

who are your favourite referees?  do you have any good referee stories?

From the olden days I really appreciate Dick Wherley and his triangle white bell bottoms.  I'm partial to Earl Hebner and Tommy Young.  However, after now seeing more and more WCW on 24/7, particularly early '90s, I think Randy Anderson is up there too.

I always thought I'd be a good referee.  I can play dumb fairly well, and my stature is certainly small enough.

you would think after nearly 100 years of this, they'd learn where to look and what to pay attention to!

There was one match in particular I remember from that "WCW top matches from clash of the champions" program on 24/7, and I think it was Flair and Steamboat. (either program part two or part three)  There was a bunch of rope moves, irish whips and a lot of running and the whole time Randy Anderson kept running in circles in the opposite direct of the wrestlers.  It was pretty great and kept going for maybe a minute?  even the commentator said something about it.

Dick Woherle definitely.  Dick Kroll was good.  I liked Ronnie West in Georgia.  I liked James Beard (especially in comparison to David Manning or Bronco Lubich).  Johnny "Red Shoes" Dugan was not nearly as great as the Apter mags had led me to believe.

Tommy Young sucked.  The only person worse to watch than him was Gilberto Roman.

Did ECW actually have referees?

I liked when ECW referees would get involved in the action or assist and not assist the wrestlers.

Dick Kroll... I recognize the name, but I can't place it.  Which promotion was he apart of?

Tommy Young had some good work during those triple cage matches (those three tier cages where you start at the top and work your way down) in the late '80s NWA/WCW.  Open the door via crank and pulley!

I liked Jimmy Korderas of the more modern set.

Tommy Young was cool. I liked both Hebners, and Brian Hebner wasn't bad, for that matter either.

John Finnegan was cool in ECW. Pee Wee Anderson, Teddy Long, all good.

Hated Gil Roman, Tim White and Jesse Hernandez. And Bill Alphonso was an idiot, too.

Fonzie is one of my favorite characters of all time.  perfect example of the scrawny and tiny man, with a HUGE mouth, who was mostly a coward.  Unless he is behind his man!  Fonzie as a referee?  doesn't impress me all that much.

I didn't mention him earlier, but Nick Patrick is classic in my opinion.

Kroll worked for the McMahons (WWWF mainly).  He was the ref for most of the major matches and title changes at MSG.

without a doubt, Tommy Young. With his infamous out of position, jumping over and sliding 3 count.

Mark Curtis, Brian Hildebrand, was one of the very best referees that I ever saw and had the pleasure of working with. Additionally he was a damn good man but if he had been an ass, he was still a top notch ref

Great referee Nick Patrick no doubt. I also liked it when he became the NWO referee.

Not only was he a great ref, it was awesome when some idiot fan would rush the ring and get taken down by a 100 pound referee.

This, Brian was also a very good friend and a roomate on the road when I fist started working indies.

Tommy Young is a classic same with Dick Whorle.
I grew up hating Izzy Modell in Pittsburgh but he played the blind ref better than most.

Pee Wee Anderson was always enjoyable to me.

I agree Harry. I don't get all the love he gets as a ref. Just never cared for him at all, especially the same spots him and Flair would do with each other in two of the supposed three greatest matches ever between Flair and Steamboat. Two of those three were basically the exact same match.
Overrated along with Tommy Young IMO.
