Just a side story involving Dick the Bruiser that I heard today. Clawmaster and I along with five other fans got together today and talked and BSed about wrestling for 3 hours and then went to Ricobenes for their specialty, the breaded steak sandwich. We were joined by Russian Brute who was originally trained by Bruiser. Anyway Brute told us that back in the mid 80's he and Ox Baker drove out to see Bruiser at his home in Indianapolis. As they pulled up in the driveway Bruiser suddenly got that mean look on his face when he saw that Ox Baker was in the car. Bruiser went in his house and came out with a sub-machine gun and told Russian Brute that if he didn't get Ox off his property in one minute that he would open fire on Ox and kill him right there and then. Needless to say they drove off and when Brute asked Ox why Bruiser was pissed at him Ox said that it was because someone stooged Ox out for talking bad about Bruiser. That's probably the same machine gun that Johnny Powers said Bruiser used to go deer hunting with.

The singles match between Fuller and Bruiser is out there on You Tube somewhere. I watched it many times but never saved it. It ends with Bruiser hitting Fuller, Fuller's manager and the ref with a chair. I know the link didn't use Bruiser or Fuller's names. It was an hour long show with Memphis TV commercials involved and all.

I'm pretty sure now that it was not Dick Afflis wrestling as the Bruiser in Abilene/Odessa in late 1958. That clipping from Abilene must be an error. The preview for the December 16 1958 Odessa card included this picture and billed Bruiser as European. This is clearly not Dick Afflis (any ideas on who this is?). The detailed Odessa results for this card match the picture, as his unique hairstyle was referred to in the report. Attachment: Bruiser.jpg (Downloaded 140 times)

I'm pretty sure (from the hair) that this was Otto Von Krupp aka Boris Malenko. To confuse things, the previews for the October 28 Odessa card refers to Kurt Von Krupp, but the results refer to Otto Von Krupp. The reviews in the Odessa paper were quite detailed during this time, so I can only assume that he was introduced to the ring as Otto, and calling him Kurt was a just a mistake in the previews (very common). The Sunday preview uses the same picture I posted above, with the subtitle "Karl Von Krupp... The Bruiser". The article makes a note that Von Krupp is also known as The Bruiser. Looking for pictures of Otto Von Krupp on-line, the distinctive hair style is clear. I'm 99% sure then that The Bruiser here was Boris Malenko and not Dick Afflis. From the Crusher Record Book by George Lentz November 3, 1984 Rosemont Horizon, IL A-18,000 Dick the Bruiser & The Crusher were entered in a tag team battle royal won by Jerry Blackwell & Boom Boom Bundy Bruiser & Crusher were the 4th team eliminated. I was there that night and the place was packed. The AWA was running tag team battle royals throughout the territory and this was the only time Crusher teamed with Bruiser for a battle royal tag tournament. Usually Baron Von Rashcke was teamed with Crusher for these. Last edited on Sun Dec 9th, 2012 09:14 pm by Chitown Rich |
