What wrestlers from the Territory days where big stars, completely fell out and worked for a while in the indies (probably $50-$100 payoffs then in a lot of places) and then made it back to the big time and was on top of a territory.  Not just a few weeks in the indies but a year maybe.

Some That I think of are

Larry Zbyszko

Randy Savage

Terry Funk (on numerous occassions)

Tommy Rich a time or two.  You can probably even put the Rock 'n' Roll Express and Bobby Eaton in that category.

Bob Orton Jr. had his run in ICW at the start of the 80s... was he expunged from the NWA territory rosters entirely by then?   Both he and Bob Roop would go on to get work around the same time in Mid-South by 1981-82 if memory serves.

Reading some early 70s results form the Carolinas, I wonder if George Becker worked smaller companies at the end of his career with no plans to come back to Crockett Promotions.

In the random lump of results thread I have a few post 1988 indy listings for Nikita Koloff during the time he was dealing with his wife's illness.

I think Paul Orndorff went from WWF ( took some time-off ), worked a few indies ( had a match with Tully somewhere ), showed-up in WCW in the Summer of '90, left, did Abram's UWF, SMW, and finally came back to WCW in late '92/early'93 until 2001.

He wrestled against Kerry Von Erich on the indie curcuit in 1990 before returning to WCW. This was before SMW even started. This was prior to the Dudes With Attitude vs. 4 Horsemen period. He was also AWF Champ & NWL Tag Team Champ w/Brian Blair (indie promotions) before returning again to the main stage
