Verne Gagne: He was AWA Champ when I started watching in 1969. So I'm not counting the guys before that because I didn't see them.

Billy Robinson
Ivan Koloff
Superstar Billy Graham
Nick Bockwinkel

Nick Bockwinkel: Bock shockingly beat Verne for the Title. I thought Robinson would beat Verne at Comiskey Park in 1974.

Verne Gagne
Billy Robinson
Andre The Giant
Hulk Hogan
Ray Stevens
Dick The Bruiser
The Crusher

Ric Flair: Started seeing Flair on a regular basis in late 1983.

Kerry Von Erich
Dusty Rhodes
Magnum TA
Ricky Steamboat
Nikita Koloff
Barry Windham

Hulk Hogan: Saw his whole Hulkamania run in the WWF

Roddy Piper
Randy Savage
Paul Orndorff
Big Boss Man- Hogan's matches against Boss Man were really good.

I started off with Mad Dog Vachon in 1966.

Top challengers in Chicago were

1. Verne Gagne

2. Crusher

3. Wilbur Snyder

4. Killer Kowalski

then Verne won the belt

1. Billy Robinson

2. Dr. X

3. Bill Watts

4. Lou Thesz

I never ever thought that Bockwinkel would become champ but he did. His top challengers in Chicago were

1. Verne Gagne

2. Dick the Bruiser

3. Billy Robinson

4. Ernie Ladd

then Verne regains for a short while

1. Nick Bockwinkel

2. Jerry Blackwell

I didn't really read Beej's question thoroughly, so I didn't list people based upon guys who I thought would take the title.  It was more of a retrospective look at challengers.  I didn't see Brody, Race, or the Von Erich's challenge for the titles.  Those are all feuds, or in Brody's case, matches that I saw afterwards.

I started watching JCP in '85 and was 11 years old.  I didn't realize that Ronnie Garvin was 5'4" or 54 years old.  I knew that he looked tough, was the National Champion, had the hands of Stone, and had knocked Ric Flair out on television.  It seemed like he had Flair's number and Tully's number and he was more convincing to me than Wahoo, Buddy Landell, and a lot of the other contenders at the time.

I listed Ronnie over other challengers of the time like Magnum and Nikita because looking back on it, I thought he had more matches and better chemistry with Flair.  I could have listed Sting, but I thought their matches were overrated.  I thought about Steamboat because their 2 falls match in New Orleans at the Clash may be the best match I've ever seen, but I never really took him as a serious threat to the title after the way he had left the WWF until he actually won the title.
